I've got both sides recorded but I'm working on issues with the audio quality. Still loud and disorted like the first rip. I'm trying a number of things to get good quality audio in, but if I can't do any better, I'll just try to fix/master the loud rips I have right now and post it by tonight. I'm using a traditional record player, not a usb vinyl ripping device, and recording the output.
Technics Turntable > RCA audio output > RCA audio cables > "Phono" input of Sony reciever > 1/4 inch Headphone jack > long 1/4 inch to 3.5mm conversion extension cable > male-male 3.5mm cable > input of Laptop > Audacity.
I've turned off all input enhancements on the laptop. The "Phono" input is meant to take the RIAA EQ off the audio. My receiver is pretty old (the audio cuts out occasionally, to fix it I literally have to whack the top of it) but I think the problem lies in the 1/4inch to 3.5mm converter and the male-male cord, or possibly the headphone jack. The audio sounds fine coming through the speakers connected to the reciever, it's getting messed up somewhere after that.
EDIT: Fixed the problem by muting the reciever, which knocks the output down 20db instead of fully muting the sound. Touching up the audio now, doing some click and pop removal and removing some background hiss.

These files (and other music files I have been sent unrelated to this forum) end with .zip.
So I presume these are therefore zipped files. My understanding (from my work) is that you right click on a zipped file to extract the contents and then open in an appropriate programme (I'm using windows 7 incidentally).
But that ain't working. What am I doing wrong?
Feel free to take the piss if you want...

move your cursor on top of the .zip
now: Push the button!
and very, very soon after that:
Do it Again!
this trick is usually called a double click but it is more fun to tell it in chemical brother lyrics
