We have what's called the Santa Ana winds this time of year, every year. The wind kicks up and blows in all directions. Then stops suddenly, then starts up again. Plus it's dry as a bone since we don't get much rain. One spark can set off a fire that can last for days and with the big fires, firemen from different states are called in to help fight. It's also a time when arsonists have the upper hand. 3 fires near us were set by arsonists and the winds just fan the flames. 14 years ago Laguna Beach had really nasty fires and lots of homes were lost - the whole city was on lock down and parents couldn't get to their kids who were being held at the high school in the gymnasium, and you couldn't enter or leave the city.
It sucks, but it's par for the course living where we do. It smells like a giant BBQ outside my office and I wish they'd close shop and let me go home.

MY BABY!! SOMEBODY HELP SAVE MY BABY!!
It's all good in the hood right now (except the winds have decided to pick back up). My parents live in fire country right now. The town across the way from them has been evacuated and my mom is... being my mom. First she's freaking out, next thing she's calm which is so typical of her.

Good lord, this thread is all over the place... I love it!
Stay safe in soCal!!! I hope the winds die down so the fire takes a chill pill. I love LA to death, but dammit if I haven't only been out here in Arizona for a couple years now and this is the second major fire I've seen. I was out in LA for the one a year and a half ago. The sky almost looked like dusk during the middle of the day because there was so much smoke in the sky. And it was raining ash all over the place. CREEPY!

So, just outta curiosity I did a search for this new young lass to see what her music was all about because I really don't know anything about her. My first impression of her is the song "Smile". So she's got a good voice and all, but I sure hope the song didn't have a really personal touch. I saw what happend with the records in that vid, and I cringed! Maybe someone that knows more about her can shed some light so I don't fear for Ed's vinyl collection... not that it's really any of my business what happens to Ed's record collection, but from one young dj to a legend dj, I would hate to see anything such as that happen.

I can actually see some stars from my patio and the wind has died down, but it still smells like one big ol' BBQ outside. So far around southland some 250,000 are displaced and fires are still being fought.
As for the Smile video - it's just a video. And I'm sure Ed's vinyl is safe and sound. You can hear some of Miss Allen's songs on her myspace. I quite like the song LDN, personally.

Yes that is indeed a capital track!
I didn't realise this thread had become about the California fires too. I saw it on the telly and thought of you peeps there. Good to know you're not in immediate danger, but still a scary situation. I really fear fires.

Consumer, you all in Australia have your fair share of fires - so I know you all can feel what's happening a few continents away. I remember that one you had a while back that endangered all that wildlife (koalas).
Jenny - surprisingly not many people have died. I think in San Diego county there was 1 reported death. Not sure about other counties, but the toll isn't very high all around which is good. There's been a number of injuries though. It's the firefighters who're putting their lives on the line, fighting it out with axes and shovels because there's just not enough air support in some areas. Not to mention all the wildlife and pets left behind that have perished. Last night the winds were fierce, kept me up all night but right now where I am it's creepily still at the moment but good for fighting fires. There's a big wall of smoke I can see just over the ridge from where my balcony faces. I can't tell exactly where it's coming from though. The strange thing too is watching the birds. The poor things don't know what to do, this year they're usually flying south and you can see flocks making their ways but now they're just kind of flying whereever in small groups.

I'm glad this topic went from discussing wether it's O.K. to discuss somebody's private life to wild fires. Altho i don't like wildfires either esp close to my loves ones!
I remember may 2006 there was a big landslide in Cali and we were worried. We were roadtrippin by then somewhere in Sout Dakota when we saw it on the news.
Wild fires can be VERY freightning. The smell of fire makes me scared and alert; many people have this, its an instinct we have. I'm glad you guys are okay!
I remember the wild fires in Oz and Tasmania when i was there. It was vry scary!
