Probably the first album of 2010 that didn't turn me off on first listen. I know I've mentioned this man/band before with his last album, Andorra (sp?), but this album comes out next month, is flowing on the internets right now and is awesome!

I first started listening to him when Socialism's short-lived blog posted a youtube video of a song on his last album.

This guy has been around for a while releasing instrumental/breakbeat/downtempo/idunno stuff for years, slowly adding more songs with vocals on it, until his last album (mentioned above) came out a few years back which is one of the best summer album in years, a very bright, psychedelic, high energy album that is well produced and doesn't get old easily (maybe 28 listens in a week).

So Swim is a bit different, still psychedelic, but more synth rich and more nocturnal feelin, with a balance of vocals and instrumental tracks. Does some really cool stuff from a technical standpoint. So hopefully people here can take the seriousness of me saying "this guy did something different from his last/best album and I still enjoy it a lot."

Beat me to it Biff, great band! Well worth checking out. Also if you haven't heard Atlas Sounds album 'Logos' well worth a listen.

need to check this out....

the manitoba (caribous first name) album 'up in flames' is still in my top 3 albums of all time.

i could wax lyrical about it forever, its a psychedelic trip down a dusty desert road, meoldically and texturally stunning. its dripping in so much vibe you could squeeze it like a sponge and watch the atmosphere ooze out.

its the sound of a furrowed brow relaxing.

in short, i could shit superlatives about it all day, but it is awesome.

will def be checking swim out!

Caribou is awesome. His music is just really resonant. Plus he's Canadian and has a Ph D in math...

(I'm Canadian and currently an undergrad in math)

He put on a turn-down collar, a black bow, and wore his Sunday tail-coat. As such, he looked spruce, and what his clothes would not do, his instinct for making the most of his good looks would.

I'm glad people are in the know! Totally agree with you Mippio, up in flames is an amazing album.

Never knew that he has a phd in math, that explains so much. Haven't heard of Atlas Sounds, but I need more music, so I'll search for them next record store visit (my work is near a good record shop, great for lunch breaks)

Nice, they look like good shows, trippy visuals, live band. I plan on seeing them in SF

well, wow. On a rare occasion the indie radio station in Chicago will play some awesome tunes. Last night I was traveling in the car with my Dad listening to some sports radio. It was your typical radio program with complaining callers talking about how poorly the Cubs and Sox have been playing. There was a lot of meatball callers starting to debate shit about nothing. My Dad bit, and tried engaging me in a conversation over some of the dumb tripe being talked about on the radio. Before we got too deep into conversation I quickly flipped to FM and landed on the very beginning of Caribou's Odessa and cranked the volume up. Of course he started mocking the tune (as he does with any music he is not familiar with), but as it went along, I could tell he really enjoyed it. It was just one of those silly unexpected moments. Any who, yeah, Carbiou Rocks!

CD is out today in US, got it on my usual Tuesday lunch-break trip to the record store. Such a good album, way better than sports radio.

It's an excellent album. I've now listened a few times and allowed it to really sink it. Really looking forward to seeing him in two weeks! Posted Image

Nice! Got tickets for the San Francisco show. They look awesome - crazy visuals, live band, what more do you need?

Wow. The show at The Independent is on a Monday. Really?

Biff, if I don't go to this show we should definitely grab a bite to eat or have a drink or two beforehand. I live roughly three blocks from the venue. :)

Listening to the album. I'm at the second track and I'm already impressed and seduced :) Thanks for the discovery Biff !

EDIT : heard the whole album now. Definitely great ! It sounds a mix of The Dragons and In Flagranti.

I'm jumping on the bandwagon so I can say, I'm kinda diggin it too! I'm just sampling around on youtube right now, but am liking what I'm hearing. Nice textures and overall composition.

This chilled atmosphere of this music is so fitting for Biff, the forum's most chilled out member.

I saw Caribou last week—really great show. When he walked on stage to set up his own gear and to give a fan a high-five, I was confident it would be an excellent concert. It went beyond pretty awesome and delved deeply into brilliant: multi-instrumentation at its finest, all mixed up with a relaxed environment and simple, psychedelic visuals. I urge anybody interested in his music to check out his live show; his band is very tight, and their performance adds so much to the music, quite unlike the standard conversion from electronic music to a live band. (Also, $15 a ticket is a no-brainer for musicianship of this calibre.)
