well that high is just wrong, they really shouldn't be so. where did you get uncompressed surround from..?

and actually that's not how lithium batteries work , rather it's best never to let them die. I recommend the couple week battery drain because it lets all short term storage reset.

GLAKO, when I go to plug in my ipod to charge it (through the comp or wall socket), nothing happens. Screen is dead. There's not even the littlest bit of juice left - it's been that way since Friday when I left work. Yesterday when I went to charge it up and test out my earphones, I can't even get the thing to turn on.

It's kind of old (2004 first gen mini) and I know these these ipods are notorious for not having a very long life. I'll try giving it another charge in a couple of days and see if anything good comes out of it. If nothing else, the thing has had a good run and lasted quite a while, all things considered.

I can't go back to either of my 3 CD Walkmans, because Sony is utter shit, and all 3 broke down...

As a rule of thumb you could say that normal CD audio is about 10 times as "big" as 192compressed MP3 audio. So a 3 Mb MP3 song would be 30 Mb uncompressed.

I still have my CD player from my freshman year in high school! That thing saved my sanity during many a field trip.

actually not quite 1920, more like 1411kbps.

whirly, try letting it drain completely and sit there for 2 weeks to a month. :)

Actually, those high kbps song might have been some of my exports from Digital Performer back in the day. I really don't know. =P I'm confused as ever.

When I got my iPod at 14, I dismantled my CD player. It's circuit boards are somewhere in storage, probably. Don't ask - I take everything apart that's obsolete at the time. ><; Kinda wish I had it now, though. Walking without music is maddening. Get one song in your head and it won't leave. That $1 Walkman at the thrift store's looking really nice, right now...

Are you guys buying into the HD bollocks of the moment?

It was painful to watch VHS, then came along DVD to save the day. I have no problems with the quality of DVD so I don't need to upgrade to HD, not for another 5 years or more. Getting HD television is expensive to run too.

We bought into the HD bollocks quite some time ago. We've had an HD television for nearly 4 years. It was an investment since we spend a lot of time at home. We didn't take full advantage of the HD investment until last year when we signed up for HD channels and upgraded our cable package, and eventually got a PS3 with DVD upscaling and the luscious blu-ray. DVD is light years better than VHS, no question. The DVD upscaling makes for a sharper picture compared to our standard DVD player. High def really optimizes the viewing and listening experience for me and I enjoy what I'm getting out of it. That said, it has been costly haul that we've built over time, but for our lifestyle it was an investment that has so far been well worth it.

I have a PS3. And while I don't have an HD TV nor any Blu-Ray movies I can compare to other, non-HD movies, the Blu-Ray games I've played - gwa - they are so sweet. The ultimate next step in video gaming, for sure.

No doubt it's a spunkalicious view, but did you HD users have a problem with DVD quality that you felt you needed to upgrade or did you feel you had to keep up with the neighbours?

HD downloads Glako, you must have a fookin fast connection.

We're always a bit behind with technology in the U.K. so the HD thing is reasonably new compared to other countries.

Nah, I personally didn't and still don't have a problem with regular DVD quality. For me, the upgrade is purely material so I guess it could be construed as a "keeping up with the neighbors" thing. I sort of view it as home improvement, as I said before it's been an investment as it makes sense with our lifestyle - a bit like upgrading a home theater system, getting a new computer, or even buying a better sofa. As a result we are a bit spoiled, so yeah...

For us, we already had a package deal through our cable company - phone, internet and cable are all in one. My parents have been using satellite television with HD for quite a while, we were impressed with the quality and the difference between a regular feed and HD is almost as vast as the difference between VHS and DVD. We still felt investing in HD television wasn't worth the investment (there's still really not a whole bunch of channels that offer HD) and even though we had an HD ready television for a while, we wanted to wait until we felt it was a good time to upgrade. Eventually there was a promotion with our cable company we use going on around the same time those Planet Earth series (which is an astounding series!!) were being aired for the first time. We thought we'd try it - it was only $14 more per month and the new package deal included a dvr box which we've certainly gotten more than enough use out of. The channels that offer HD get rinsed big time at my house. Even shows like Lost and Heroes - they do look and sound much better on HD than a standard cable feed.

stash got a bonus last year, and he's a big gamer geek and he'd been tossing the idea of getting either an XBox or PS3. As before, with our lifestyle, this too was an investment. We like to be entertained and we really don't have a ton of money so entertaining ourselves at home is the best way to go for us. I'm not a gamer geek, but HD gaming as Vorpal threw out there is quite sweet. The added bonus is the blu-ray and DVD upscaling. The difference between the DVD upscaling and regular DVD isn't terribly massive, but *is* noticeable... Difference between blu-ray and standard DVD are quite noticeable to me (maybe because I watch a lot of movies and have a good television).

very happy to hear it :)

one note about HD: it's not just the sharper picture -- it's the colour depth and definition. and beyond video, Bluray movies often now come with uncompressed or lossless audio!!
