Hey whirly, what's your sign about. I don't get it :? ...
Chai
In Hebrew chai means living or life and for those more devout refers to a living god (or as religious Jews write it, "G_d" ) The phrase l'chayim is a variation on the word chai and it means "to life". It's a toast much like the phrase "cheers". It's said repeatedly at celebrations and such, or whenever the social gathering calls for it. It's actually kind of a cool thing.
It's not pronounced with the Ch as in Charlie of chai tea. It's pronounced as though the 'c' is silent and the 'h' is not pronounced as it is like house or even high. It's a harder, crunchy sounding 'H' that comes from the middle of the throat not from the lungs like it is in the English language - think sort of clearing your throat combined with a light hissing sound.
Just get yourself chai.
