So close now, just over a week away... (!)
Australia actually managed to beat Greece last week in Melbourne. It has been a loooooong time since we kept a team to nil! Plus we were not at full strength either. We get to play the Netherlands this Sunday, oh joy.
In the Cup we have Japan first up. Then... Brazil... then Croatia. So, oh shit there it is. We will have to be in top form for the entire 270 + minutes of the group stage, and then some just to make it to Stage Two. heh.
The only time we've ever been in the WC was 32 years ago, in West Germany! Haha. This is gonna be fantastic. :D

France won yesterday against Danmark, the team played very well, it sounds good for the world cup... Plus we have a new top player, Ribeyri ! He has only 2 selections, and the stadium were calling his name before he got in the game From what I've seen yesterday, all teams have to be careful coz he rulez 8)
Please Australia, get rid of Brazil right at the beginning so we can play against you on the quarterfinals and easily win :D

Wishful thinking ;-) ......It would be so strange to actually see australia play Brazil this time over because I've always supported brazil during all the world cups I've watched but this time I'm hoping we'll kick there arse.
its a little early but thanks anyway

I'll be loosely supporting a few teams, but I'm not getting too attached to anyone.
Be supporting England and Germany for personal, ethnic reasons. Mexico because it's become the adoptive country of many of my friends. Spain for the Liverpool connections (to a lesser extent Australia and Czech Republic for similar reasons; poor Smicer).
Other than that, go underdogs and hopefully a lot of good football!

We have a fairly good record against France. :-D But we've never played against you guys in the World Cup. :)
Brazil though, eeeeeek! I am really excited about that match, but also really apprehensive too.

What do you Americans think to your World Cup chances this time around?
I feel like a fish out of water in these types of threads, I don't follow sports except the occasional baseball game (like when the Angels won the world series a few years back, a feat which is likely never to be seen in my lifetime again) but I do like the Olympic sports. Anyway. Football - or soccer as we called it over here - was, as I was growing up, a sport relegated to after school programs (for example the AYSO, American Youth Soccer Association) for the kiddies and social hour on the sidelines for the parents. It wasn't until a few years ago that this sport started gaining a wider audience here - remember our most popular sports are (American) Football, Baseball, Basketball and Hockey which dominated the playing field.
But I think interest is definitely growing, interest is a lot higher these days than it was before. I'm now seeing commercials advertising the World Cup on television, a lot. This is something new for us. But seeing as I don't follow sports it's hard for me to give an opinion on what Americans think our chances are in the Cup.
be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle
