Bout the album, finally came out in my third world country yesterday, and I must admit it was pretty much a turn off the first listen. That?s the problem with worshipping and following a band. U'r always like WTF (most of the times) when u hear something new they'r tryin to do. On first listen last night, I actually didn't even like Spitfire much, except for Juliette's TRIPPY SEXY vocal sample the song starts with. To anyone who uses Reason, U could see exactly where Liam was coming from on this disc. It's like a genius kid suddenly discoverin the joys of junkin all his hardware n freaking out with Reason. It actually sounds like he wrote most of the structures and layers and ideas in one night. It's the best Reason demo/ tutorial anyone could ask for, but then it certainly doesn't stop at that.
Today morning, I changed my perspective totally around, tried to forget whatever he's done in the past and hear it again without any prejudice. Strange, but it did sound much better already. Think it'll grow on me, and no, I'm not gonna form an opinion on the album for at least another 10 days. It needs that much time to sink in. For it's certainly not conventional prodigy though there are streaks of punky funky liam all over.. Hardhitting as ever. At least he's trying. But I just could not find that HUGE punch in the face of a Jilted or a FOTL.. Or the insane genius grooves and darkness of my fav Prodigy.. the genius genius Experience. This one sure doesn't send my brain to another dimension. Not yet anyway.
I'll reserve further comments till a week. There was a time when I worshipped the Prodigy almost as much as the Chems, but I think time has shown what a different level the Chems are. They are the fuckin' Einsteins of music. They'r not human, period. Liam on the other hand is still just havin fun. ;)
Btw, I LOVED his version of Nirvana's Love Buzz. I just hope this album grows and has staying power. I have doubts right now, but I'm not givin up on Mr. Howlett yet. He sure has the brains to fuck ours'. I really wish he'd spent some more time with this album. It's almost like he wrote the whole thing on Reason in one sitting. Except for a few samples, the rest just don't have that hard hitting machine punch Liam was so famous for. They'r way more software to me. Lets see how it goes over the weekend. Will be back. :)

I guess the point of this rant is to say put the Reason thing out of your head and listen to the album objectively. What stopped me from liking the album for a while was that I kept comparing it to FOTL. Listen to it a couple of times like it's his first album and you can respect where he's coming from, and hear it in itself, not compared to something else. I know I had to do this with 'Come With Us' when it was released, and now it's one of my all time fave albums...

When I heard it a few weeks ago at work, it sounded really kick ass. Actually, a lot of things sound better at work to me, it has to be the high stim environment in which I work - then I get the record home and listen to it on my own time and my mind changes. But now, I don't know... I really don't know if I like this record even enough to let it grow on me. That makes me sad and disappointed. I am so glad I didn't have to spend the money on it. Thank god for promos.
I realized for the first time today, that Spitfire, though I'm sure would make an excellent song for a video game or tune to drive on a deserted road to, is far too long. It never ends. I stand by my previous statements that Spitfire sets the tone of the whole record. It is exhausting to listen to all the way through. Memphis Bells... don't like that broken-toy-piano type sound, it's grating. Girls is a standout track and the song with Juliette Lewis surprised me in a good way considering her efforts with her own band have been nothing more than mediocre.
By the second half of the record approached, I was exhausted. I don't know if this is a good thing - I suppose I am used to being spoiled by artists whose records have peaks and valleys, high points and low points, and allow some breathing room in the mix. Maybe I'm mellowing with age. This record is a migraine inducing head pounder straight through to the end and the screaming really gets on my nerves.
The overly loud repetitiveness and the break downs aren't a whole lot to write home about. There is no depth to the layers within the music and the production, while decent to better than a lot of shit I hear, manages to be bombastic.
I'm sure if I heard this record back when I was listening to nothing but industrial music 9 years ago, it would've been a boot stomper for sure. But maybe I'm just mellowing with age and expect more of artists who take 7 year hiatuses. AONO sounds like it's trying so very hard to be angry, it lacks innovation and soul, and quite frankly it seems as though it's trying to outgun (no pun intended) Fat of the Land... if that can at all be possible. I can't say I've been waiting with bated breath for this record and I'm not a massive fan, but I've enjoyed Prodigy in the past and hoped the long wait would be worth it.
To sum up: I know there's a lot of Prodigy fans here and I don't want to offend anyone with my opinionated ramblings. I know how important and personal music can be. So if I did, I'm sorry.
But to the rest who are curious and unsure of whether or not this would be a good purchase, I highly advise you borrow a copy from a friend or somehow in some way give this a good solid listening before purchasing. At face value, it seems like a dirty slick record that would be good driving music, but I think I'm gonna take this back to work and see if a coworker can get some good use out of it.

Also, if anyone hasn't seen the cool new Prodigy media player, check it out, it's interactive:

For me (a mild Prod fan who's enjoyed the music in the past) to say I didn't care for the new record is one thing. It's another to see people who are big enough fans to join their messageboard, and post negative comment after comment after comment and slagging off the band members/Prodigy in general. I just skimmed through some of the threads and yes, there's a lot of hostility there - the horse is beaten!
iggy, they still show Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons here in the States. (and I saw the first movie in the theater... under somewhat similiar inebriated circumstances you experienced with the Turtles) I can't bear to watch the cartoons, I just feel so cheesy inside and my son's not into them - so I have no idea about the comparisons you drew. ;)

Maybe the Prodigy fans will warm up to the new record like a lot of people did with Come With Us, or Charlatans "Wonderland." I think out of anyone, the die hards would give Prodigy the benefit of the doubt and grant a few more listens and let the record grow on them.
I hope so - just for the band's sake. I gotta hand it to Liam who's vowed to start fresh from the beginning, like... sort of reinvent himself with AONO. He's taking a big chance that a lot of artists aren't willing to take.

I don't think I can even spin it enough to give it a chance to grow on me or any such thing. I don't mind hearin this record if someone's playin it once in a while, but it's nowhere close to what Liam was, and is capable of. To me, he's sadly lost the plot. He's taken his fans for a frikkin ride.

It's got a few decent covers.. the thriller thing, the lovebuzz song towards the end.. also a couple of other songs that i can spin a few times a year.. i like medusa's path a bit.. but most of the rest is crap. It's just another average record. Nothing prodigal.
