To do in LA Tue 24: Chris Cunningham premiere at RES

RES hosts another edition of their periodic digital screenings Tuesday night in LA. Included: the West Coast premiere of Chris Cunningham's new short film Rubber Johnny, as well as new music videos for Basement Jaxx, Quasimoto, Aesop Rock, Amon Tobin and more. Cunningham is a brilliant filmmaker. He directed my absolute favorite music video of all time -- All is Full of Love, for Bjrk. The video featured a milk-white tableau of dreamy android love; some believe it was ripped off wholesale to create the look and feel of robots in the movie I, Robot. Here's a synopsis of the film debuting tomorrow.

Johnny is a hyperactive, shape-shifting mutant child, kept locked away in a basement. With only his feverish imagination and his terrified dog for company, he finds ways to amuse himself in the dark. Rubber Johnny is the latest creation from the UK’s most imaginative filmmaker, Chris Cunningham. Featuring music by legendary electronic composer, Aphex Twin, this nightmarish and hallucinatory experimental short film is accompanied by 40 pages of drawings and photographs - Cunningham’s first published book of original artwork.

I gotta see this.

^^ I really love Cunningham's universe. I remember an ad i saw, i think it was for Aphex Twin's "Druqks" . I did not know Aphex by that time, but the ad really hurted me. I don't know who did the ad but it was perfectly Cunningham's style : it was kind of baby head with a huge brain, and the eyes were like on the trailer on the website, like with a nightvision. The sound in the background was a "digital screaming" (i don't know how to say) u can hear on one of the songs in Drukqs.

Appart from this, I love Flex <3

Come to daddy!!!

Aw fuck!

Now I'm gonna have nightmares! ;)

I'll never forget the first time I saw the Come To Daddy video.

When my son was probably a year/year and a half years old, he used to wake up in the night and I'd go off to change his diaper (nightmarish in itself, particularly when you are half asleep) or console him because he used to be a restless sleeper. Usually once I am awake it is almost impossible for me to go back to sleep right away. Especially if I have to get out of bed and spend "x" amount of minutes focusing os staying awake.

So anyway. One night my son wakes up and it's way past 2 in the morning. I get out of bed, change his diaper, lull him back to sleep - and insomnia sets in. It's past 3am, and I go downstairs to retire on the couch and see what drudge is on the television. I flip through the channels and land on Mtv, and the program AMP is on and Mr. Oizo "Flat Eric" is playing and I was so highly amused, I decided to stay on Mtv and see what other videos were playing.

Then it appears - the Come To Daddy video. And there I was, alone in the dark on my couch with nobody to console as I witnessed such frightening images. That part where the skin-and-bones demonic creature stands up and screams into that old woman's face. It was like watching a terrible car wreck in slow motion and I couldn't look away.

And any hope of going back to bed before the sun came up was quickly lost. I was simply too freaked out to even try closing my eyes, as Richard D. James' face is such a horrifying thing to have burned into your eyelids in the wee hours when nobody else is awake but you...

Yeah, I quoted the Elephant Man.

You are right, that was a very well done movie - direction wise and acting wise. There were some scenes that were heartbreaking and difficult to watch.

No Jeanie, he doesn't exist, he's special effects. And I mean 'special' in the retarded way.

I've just seen Rubber Johnny. I realy liked, it's very Cunningham-esque : very visual, dark, troubling, but too short... In my opinion, it's better than Flex, and i really like AFX237 v7, which is the music to this short film.

Anyone else have seen it ?
