[This review contains numerous spoilers, so if you don't want to know what it's like, well... don't read it you moron!]
Yup, here it is... Don't be frightened, you might be surprised. Hell, even I'm surprised of me!! Okay, let's skip the bullshit and get on with it:
.
.
.
01. No Path To Follow
>>> The Intro. Can’t say much about it, except that I’ve heard better intro’s. For example: nothing beats the ‘Brothers Gonna Work It Out’ intro from Exit Planet Dust. 5/10
02. We Are The Night
>>> The Title track. I would expect a track like this at the end of the album, so this is certainly a promising start. Heck, this sounds like the second part of The Sunshine Underground, with all the bells and whistles! Me likes!! 9/10
03. All Rights Reversed (feat. The Klaxons)
>>> Fucking hell, another corker! This sure beats my expectations, which were quite low after hearing the recent Electronic Battle Weapons and the weak single ‘Do It Again’. Killer vocals, killer vibe. If they don’t play this song in June ’07 I’m gonna throw beer bottles on the stage! Flawless Victory. 10/10
04. Saturate
>>> Edited (and slightly updated) version of EBW 8. Shameless to say: I didn’t like it back then and I don’t like it now, although it works better in this edited format. It just doesn’t do anything for me. Oh well, too bad. Next! 5/10
05. Do It Again (feat. Ali Love)
>>> It’s okay, but nothing special. This dude tries too hard to sound like Bobby Gillespie. But this ain’t no ‘Test’. The track also takes a while to build, but it never really peaks. My advice: stick to the radio edit. Do it again? No thanks. 5/10
06. Das Spiegel
>>> Starts out like an electro song, but after 40 seconds or so a guitar joins in, and soon we hear happy bouncy melodies and a moaning female (what’s in a name!). It’s a fun song, but even after a dozen plays I had a hard time remembering what it sounded like. Oh well, maybe it’s supposed to grow on you... Or maybe not. 7/10
07. The Salmon Dance (feat. Fatlip)
>>> Not to be confused with The Hampster Dance. It sounds like a kiddy theme tune, but with Fatlip (ex-Pharcyde) rapping over it about inventing a new dance (the title) and ‘niggers’ dancing like a fish. The lyrics are quite funny though, but it sounds more like a filler than a real song. There’s a joke at the end too, but it ain’t that funny, nor surprising. 6/10
08. Burst Generator
>>> A few words: hypnotic, psychedelic, trippy. Love the guitars, love the vibe. It’s like The Chems thought: and now for something completely different! And different it is! Can’t really describe it, or compare it, because you should hear it with your ears. But let me tell you: this song fucking rocks!! 9/10
09. A Modern Midnight Conversation
>>> 80's crap of the worst kind. 'Listen to your heart' the vocal goes... My heart (and my ears) told me to turn this off. And so I did. Imho artists who force their Eighties revival crap on us should be shot point blank, starting with Scissor Sisters. No remorse! 4/10
10. Battle Scars (feat. Willy Mason)
>>> Hmmm. Didn’t like the very gay sounding intro vocals, but the rest of the song was pretty decent. Especially the part around 3:30 minutes was ace. Too bad the track never lifts off the ground like previous Chems vocal songs (‘Out of Control’, ‘The Test’, ‘All Rights Reversed’). A missed (but forgivable) opportunity. 6/10
11. Harpoons
>>> Synths, strings and vocals, and that’s all there is to it. Sounds more like an intro to ‘The Pills Won’t Help You Now’, but it’s chilled out and quite nice Ambient stuff. Yeah, I like this. 7/10
12. The Pills Won’t Help You Now (feat. Midlake)
>>> Chilled out, very spacey. I believe the vocals are about someone who popped a few too many pills or something like that. I couldn’t really care about the lyrics actually, but the vibe is great. And that’s all to say about it. Great end song. 8/10
Conclusion:
[insert drumroll]
I like it. 7/10
