2D must be the original, hands down.
And for 3D I'm going to have to with Galaxy, probably because I haven't played that much of 64.

@whitenoise: I cannot tell you enough how much you're missing out if you haven't played either Mario 64 or Sunshine. Sunshine is an oddball that probably not many people love, and at first I was disappointed, but there is a certain degree of control that later 3D Mario games have lost (probably because they got rid of the tackle move).
Generally, I think the Galaxy games are really boring compared to the previous two 3D games -- there is no exploring, nor "Can I get there?" moments, nor any real puzzles. Its just a bunch of "Here is the same level again, but now there is a 'cheap' challenge such as one-hit kills, race against the clock, bunch of Shadow Marios, or any combination. And it is almost 100% obvious where the stars are in galaxy, and how to get to them. It really makes me sad, because they are 'good,' but relative to previous Mario games, they are linear with superficial extra challenge to some way balance the game.
[Sorry about the rant, but Galaxy... I want to like them, but there is not comparison! ]

True
Mario 64 was the first real 3D platformer, and is still the best in my opinion.
So I voted Mario 64 as best overall
Mario 64 for best 3D and
New Super Mario Bros. Wii for best 2D : it's the result of 25 years of 2D Marios, the first to include a real multiplayer coop, and simply the best 2D Mario, in terms of gameplay and visual aspect.

I agree. Your totally right about it, I'm just wondering if Nintendo's even trying anymore with a smooth creative layout of their future games or are they just throwing out things out of the blue and calling it "Awesome"?
