Insurance for young people and new drivers is very high to, i think thats the main problem in terms of people not driving. Your insurance will often be more than the cars value. For blokes insurance is so much more :x

But yeah your correct whirly about the fuel and maintenance.

chemicalreaction, it's different over in the UK when it comes to licenses and cars. It's not like the US where cars are cheaper and disposable as well as a symbol of freedom and getting your license is like a right of passage.

First, the cost of vehicles in the UK is very high. The cost of fuel is very high, as is maintenance. Ease of public transportation in the UK makes it convenient not to own a car. There's lots of people there who aren't losers who don't see the need to throw their money away on a car.

And also, the impression I've got of many cities in the USA is that they're pretty much built around the idea that everyone drives a car, it's not like that in most European cities...

I agree with irishfan, I don't drive, doesn't really interest me at the moment. iggy don't listen to chemicalreaction, this is the guy who keeps his cd collection in his car and who thinks its not irresponsible to use a mobile whilst driving (something which is now illegal in the UK) }:-) :P .

Many young people own cars here because they have rich parents who buy it for them. My high school has a very large majority of youths driving to and from school and especially in this city because it is growing everyday and the traffic problem gets worse and worse. Your automaticaly labeled "USEFUL" if you have a vehicle at my school, and are used for it daily. As for me I choose not to get a vehicle untill the hydrogen fuel cell cars are released for I feel we are going nowhere to stopping green house gas emissions (also cant afford a car :) )

OMG you guys are hysterical. It is so funny to me that you are all putting down a way of living that most Americans have. Cities and public transportation around here is really not built to cater the general public. They have public buses and vans for old folks, that's pretty much it. Which is really very sad. Therefore you gotta have a car. Pretty much everyone i know has a vehical. so therefore i was in a little cultural shock to hear iggy still hasn't got a license but where he comes from it's norm. I find it rather interesting to read when everyone talks about going to see chems in train or buses....but that's what goes on there. ;-)

Cant remeber what show it was but they had stated that European countrys tend to spend much more on bike transporation, buses, mass transit etc, than North American countries do. Go figure 8)

I loooove driving. it's so fun. I can totally understand someone in europe though not having a car or drivig. I know in germany, getting your license is a gauntlet of tests and schooling. But there is something magical about either strolling through cities with your windows down and your stereo up or flying on the highway.

Ahhhhhhhhh 8O 8O 8O , this can't be true

don't get me wrong, i respect your choice, but this track is quite crap... (just for my understanding of good quality music) and i hate copies of copies of cover versions of original songs...
