Prefer the original. Nothing against acoustic versions - just doesn't seem to go right with it.
Just played both these in a row, they're strikingly similar:

So maybe Dissolve is the MGMT collaboration that everyone was talking about

OK.
- The way the drums first start.
- Time To Pretend @ 0:10 is similar to the intro for Dissolve.
- Chorus - Breakdown - Chorus structures.
- Bassline of Time To Pretend sounds like the end-of-TSU-eqse effect in Dissolve.
- Trippy music videos featuring various human characters traversing a psychedelic landscape.
- Similar overall vibes.
- Very many musical elements going on at once creating a layered and slightly chaotic effect.
That's 7 similarities off the top of my head.

- The way the first drums start are very different. Dissolve has a big drum roll coming out of nowhere whereas TTP has just 2 kicks and 2 different ones; If you think those are similar, then a lot of tracks are...
- Yeah, the sounds are quite close but the way they are used is not
- huh ? There's a chorus in Dissolve ?
- Mmh...
- It's the video, it doesn't count...
- What ?
- "
Plus TTP is way slower than Dissolve, and is kinda repetitive whereas Dissolve is more progressive. You may hear some slight similarities but there actually are a lot more differences.
MGMT and The Chems are both looking for epic/psychedelic sound but the way they do it is different. I'd say MGMT are more pop-rockish.
This is not a critic, I don't hate MGMT, but they'll never reach the level of awesomeness the Chems have !
Listening to that btw :
