At least on this side of the Atlantic, Virgin/Astralwerks desperately needs to work harder on Tom & Ed's behalf if they're going to turn much of a profit.
There was NO promotional work for Push the Button over here. I never saw any of the three videos played once. Never heard any of the three singles on the radio once. Never saw any posters or promotional material once. Never heard any of the tunes played in music stores once.
I mean, these are former #1 hitmaking artists, you'd think the label would want to market them and turn a profit.
(And no, you didn't say it badly at all, I totally knew what you meant.)
As I've said before, I think Astralwerks could've done better if they had released a US chart eligible single of Believe. That was such a strong track, would've/could've done well here and kept the interest level piqued.
Simply, too much time had passed between Galvanize and The Boxer to keep the interest at a plateau at best.
But that's neither here nor there. Push The Button enjoyed a lot of success and that's really cool.
To be fair, Astralwerks worked hard including fans to work on the street team - you know, stuff like calling radio stations, flyering coffee shops and record stores, that kind of thing. I think the label did do well with giving the supplies for the street teams. Free advertising and free manpower! Which is just as well because the from what I saw, the label reps definitely had so much on their plate.
And there's another thing too. EMD (who deals with Astralwerks among other labels) merged with another major lable... I *think* although my memory is a bit fuzzy. There were a few label mergers over the past couple of years so I could be way off base.
I think there were probably a lot of executive decisions at play here as to why things happened the way they happened. Astralwerks have always been good to the Chems and I can't see Astralwerks deserting them now all of a sudden but maybe it was forces beyond the band or label's control? Wish I knew.
