Okay, so i bought the Dave Clarke Live CD like i buy any live dance title as it fascinates me no end, and is what aspire to do.
Daves set is good, if you have seen it you will notice he doesn't use a visual element, i found this strange and also found that could very much do with one.
However, i noticed he has about 4 MIDI keyboards across his desk a chunky mixer and you can see he's playing all the notes, that was fantastic!
So with the chems, which is without doubt in my opinion the best live performance in the world ever, i was wondering how much of theirs is live?
Ed seems to have controll of the keyboards and the equipment situated at the back of the stage, and Tom seems to be mixing everything through that very large mixer and playing a live drum Machine.
Also during the singles DVD in the Hoops live bit, what piece of equipment is Ed playing? I thought that was so electrifying, the mule is such a great visual element like it has lost complete control of its body, i love it!
Cheers

It's not just a drum machine that Tom's playing with, it's the sequencer for the whole song - the Akai MPC's. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they, or another MIDI interface nearby wasn't kicking out MIDI knob information, so he can tweak synths without having to wander across the stage. They only have 4 hands you see!
Basically, they play live buy using the sequencers playing loops. So they don't play keyboards live (they've admitted it's not their strongpoint), but they drop loops in when they want to, therefore effectively remixing their song live. They redo the arrangement of songs, as well as adding new sounds and tweaking old ones.

Cheers chemical fan, great help. What the bros do is amazing. I know they dont play keyboards live but didn't know they admited it as not being one of their strong points.

I can't remember where they said it, but it was describing the process they used making Star Guitar. It's called Star Guitar because the chords in it were played using their "MIDI guitar". They said it was fantastic because they'd never been great keyboard players, but Tom was quite handy on the guitar.

If you watch the dvd closely, you'll see that most of the song re-arranging is done on the big mixer. Each channel has a different component of the song looping and they are faded up or down, or muted in or out. The MPC's are triggering most of the drums as well as (I'm guessing) the other loops on the other samplers and some of the synths via midi. All of this goes through the mixer were they can bring in whatever components they want whenever they want.
They also control alot of the delay stuff live, like the echos on voices, synths and fx. They sometimes play live keyboards, like on the HBHG vid on the dvd, you can see Ed play that chord at the very beginning of the build up. Ed also plays the snare/kick rolls on HBHG/Hoops on the MPC.
Listening to the Chile set, you can hear how they do all the echo's live, and you can even hear some keyboard playing (the solo guitar bit in hoops sounds like it's done on a synth, and sounds like it's played live). I'm pretty sure alot of the synth tweaking is done live too, like the cutoff of the acid synths, and definitely the synth in the breakdown of Surface to Air (the underwater song).
I would love to see a video of a whole set of theirs, but I guess I'll just have to get right up the front when I see them in Jan :D

just got to say something not stictly on topic, but kinda.
i have seen dave clarke take to the decks a couple of times after tom and ed. his skills as a dj are amazing!! one of those people who can get on the decks and lets you know he has arrived. buggering around with the effects on a pioneer mixer. like sampling the the spinback sound of hey boy hey girl, cutting it up and mixing another tune on top. or totally chopping the beats up with military precision, like i have heard him do with his remix of chemical beats. there is not many djs on the planet that have that x factor that in one tune makes you think wow. he truely has skills that not many people could ever achive.
i must say i'm not a fan of what he plays, but i would love to see him play again. has anyone got a copy of his album??? i'd be intrested to hear that. i remember the 'compass' tune he done which was rockin!!

Yeah, Clarkeys stuff is a bit obscure a bit hard at times. I have both The Devils Advocate album and The new ' live' dvd/cd package, both are worth getting if u like the furiouse techno side that the chems produce aka the Electronic battle weapons.
I have not heard him Dj, just seen what he does on the DVD, he does need more of a visual element i feel tho.

My girlfriend and I were fortunate enough to win a competition on the late great John Peel's show earlier this year to see Dave Clarke perfom live at Maida Vale studios. It was one of the best experiences of my life and really has inspired me to go further with my own music production and live performance!
As soon as I could afford it I shot out and bought an MPC and a copy of Ableton Live and haven't looked back! For this I thank Dave and the legend that this John Peel - like the Chems, they will always be important figures of inspiration in my life! :D
