A mate of mine who has little interest in dance music (he likes his rap/hip hop crap) wants to come to Turnmills on NYE. I'm concerned that he doesn't really understand what the Chems will play. He's aware of the big tunes like HBHG and Star Guitar, but other than that I'm not sure he knows about techno.

My question is: Can you guys suggest 5/6 typical Chems DJ set tracks that I can play to him in the car tonight? Preferably not Chems tracks themselves, and preferably a couple of dark/minimal techno stuff.

There's a lot from what i've listened so far. I.e that track from the start of "In Glint" where it says "higher" and something with "... and go back". Very typical, heard it in several dj sets. And that track at minute 48, which i've heard often as well. Btw, does anyone know its name? Love that tune!!!

yeh thats HIA by the chems, and the go back tune is a cut up they did of compulsion by milo and something else - ace tunes!

quite hard to select non chems tracks as a lot of the stuff they play are either edits or their own tracks, but heres a selection id recommend:

controversy - prince

sabres of paradise - smoke belch (david holmes mix)

woody mcbride - basketball heroes

freak - josh wink (dean coleman remix)

the galloping horse techno tune (still unknown!)

plasmids - tata box inhibitors (think thats the name :?)

That's that (just for me) ominous HIA? I never had a clue of how it sounds like. Man, another treasure that attests my love for their music . . .Thanks mips!

Why that? Because it's that good or anything else?

Sorry mips, the track Csar was on about is the cut-up of DJ Milo "Return of the original artform" & Impulsion "Higher". I'll be playing that, no doubt about that!

Good call on Centro-fly, I think I've got that somewhere

I'll only have enough time to play him about 5/6 tracks tonight, and it's tonight so I don't have time to come get it :(

If he needs more convincing I'll take you up on your offer :)

yeah makes it interesting when we dj

"yeah chebbers where's the one that goes.....do dah fizz bang etc"

"erm. no idea what you're on about mate - do you know what colour the sleeve is?"

to add further confusion. we tend to give records our own names....usually based on a pun on the artists name or some random waffle.

we also do this with football players which confuses people who watch a game with us.

Don't know if this post will be too late, but....

Don't play him anything at all and tell him that if he wants to come to Turnmills just to come with an open mind and with the intention of haveing fun. If he wants to have a good night he will dance to anything anyway so just leave it as that.

Or if you fancy a laugh just play a load of 60's Folk music and tell him that that is what all the dj's are playing at the moment, or at least the really fashionable ones are anyway

Yeah, but "galloping horse" was a nickname given to it by someone on this board (mippio, I think?). What's the real name, and who's it by?
