sounds good, sounds like my cuppa tea!!! i would love to get into ableton live. i kinda sussed the basics of it but i think i need to get a book to descover more in depth fun. as a live tool i dont know how good it is (unless you got sasha's maven controller!!) but i defenately love to create a mix cd on this software!!
as for my studio i think i finally got my set up perfect, although i really would love a third cd deck, but i dont think i can really justify it!!

the main problem we are having is intergrating it with the decks - unless u get a midi clock signal from the decks ableton isnt in time and u have to kind of 'mix' ableton using tap tempo or jogging it slighl;ty. its not ideal, but u can get the redsound midi sync which converts audio to midi clock.
if u need a copy of ableton let me know ;)
ooo - whats the efx unit like? its a toss up between one of them or a kaoss pad for me at the mo - i think the kaoss pad is cheaper but it looks like the efx wil be better suited to live work - what do u make of it?

the efx 500 on the other hand is a total joy to use. i have had mine for about 15 month. when i first got it i thought the unit was quite simple, but the more i play with it there is a lot of depth of scope with what can be achived with it. i mainly use the effects on the left hand side of the machine, the beat effects. i mainly use echo and delays its amazing what can be done to a tune with these effects. i can create an infinate loop with the delay and chop beats up live, or fuck up vocals. its all good. the transform is cool. a nice effect to use when your in the mix. the pan would be good if you got a large sound system to play on and want to mess with peoples heads!! flange is pretty poo, it like a chav effect imho!! the right hand side of the unit, the jog effects are.... well i don't use them much. zip, ring and fuzz effects i have no use for but jet and wah are okay.
i definately recomend you go down to a dj shop and try the efx out. it costs more than most of the effect units on the market, but you should be able to pick on up on ebay for 200
oh and check this video out, shows the depth of this creature off quite well.

oh and as for ableton. i do already have a copy cheers. i just need to get more proficient with it!! oh and i wish it would import mp3s. i buy a lot of mp3, its just a pain in the arse to convert them to wav just to use in ableton!!!

Hardware
Roland EG-101: It's an MC-303 with a keyboard + speakers attached. I sample the shite out of it and use it for midi.
Korg Electribe EA-1: "Analog" synth. Used for samples and midi.
Behringer MX602A: 6 channel mixer.
Pioneer SE-255 headphones: Vintage!
PC: Very basic setup. The audio is on the motherboard ffs.
Software
Jeskola Buzz: Tracker/Sequencer without all the snazzy gui's that Reason has.
Cooledit Pro 2.1.
Arturia ARP2600.
Arturia Minimoog.
Korg Legacy: Includes - Korg MS-20, Korg Polysix, Korg Wavestation.
Reason.
Rebirth.
As for gear I wish I had. I wish I had a decent Mac!

I do have some musical instruments and other gear. I have an upright piano, a folk harp, some bagpipes, an old crappy guitar with a fucked up fret board, a didjeridoo, an old set of congas, and an old harmonica I keep misplacing. I've got two mics and a reel to reel. Now all I need are some people to jam with.

i believe you get what you pay for and for 125 its not going to be the most durable mixer on the market. its gonna be made from very cheap components. but on the otherhand if you get a years worth of fun out of it then it might be money worth spent.
i read in i-dj mag that sound quality was not the greatest on this mixer. anyway like everything go down the shops play with it, find out if its any good.
i found some users review on the 700 here http://www.decks.co....ehringer/DJX700

I'd like to learn other music programs but I don't have enough hours these days to get to know all their ins and outs. I suppose these things will come with time. For now Reason works for me and I want to see how far I can push that program using just my simple old keyboard and my computer.
As for my wishlist - of course there's a lot I want in the hardware department. The first thing I'd get if I had the money is a new keyboard. A couple years ago I went to the NAMM show and drooled all over tons of lovely keyboards from Korg and Yamaha and synthesizers and saw a few demonstrations - it's so amazing to me some of the things you can do with the compact studios.
But I have to set my sights a bit lower and I think the best keyboard for me, and for the money, is the Yamaha p80. It's a simple full sized keyboard, doesn't have all the bells and whistles as the higher end models but that's not something I really need. The big selling points is the natural piano sound that comes from it and the weight and feel of the hammered keys, it's lightweight and easily portable.

Hardware
E-mu PK-6
Korg EA-1
Yamaha DX-200
Roland SH32
Alesis NanoBass
Behringer Composer
Behringer Dualfex
Lexicon MPX110
Line6 Filter Pro
JoeMeek C2
FMR RNC
TL Audio Fat 1
Alesis Bitrman & Faze
Crappy CD decks + mixer + amp + monitors
(haven't listed that for a while - seems a lot!)
Software
ACID 2.0
Reason
Audacity
A few free stand-alone softsynths (SimSynth, Orangator, SubSynth, Hammerhead drum machine)
I also recently acquired ;-) Cubase SX, so I'm learning that at the moment. I think I've got my head round a few VSTi's that I got from cover CDs, but it's so much easier & fun to hook up to my hardware synths, even if I do only use Cubase to record a single track at a time.
Anyone from the South that wants to jam - let me know!!! X-D
