The Chemical Brothers new sound

I'm curious to see where the Chems will take their distinct sound and bring new music on Chemical 5. EPD had a raw, almost grungy sound. DYOH was classic Chems but everything was 'harder' and more aggressive. Surrender had a more electro/house feel and CWU, well was good but I felt the tracks were a bit disjointed. I think that maybe the new sound is going to be more like GYH (and possibly Nude Night). There are strong beats but the overall sound is 'cooler' and not as in your face as DYOH (and maybe not with 10 different things going on at once like on other tracks). This would be good too as it would hark back to their earlier work.

I get the feeling that this album will be similar to Surrender. They apparently have "some guy named Tim" in the works and there seems to be a lot of collaborations so far, seeing how 2 out of the 3 songs that are from this era so far have guest (I'm talkin bout the singles, which Tom and Ed said that GP and GYH are from the new album sessions). Plus it's really eclectic like surrender, think what we have: an alternative song GP, an acid/rap song, and a funky B-side. But I think it's ultimately going to be something totally out of the blue... like always

I dont think they will include them. They should just leave them as singles. Personally, I want the next cd to sound like the smooth, beautiful melodic adventure Surrender always takes me on with the acidic sounds and catchy basslines CWU presents. If it is anything like EPD or DYOH, Im going to be disapointed.

It'll be impossible to predict, it'll be a sound we won't have heard before.
What's the word people use to describe the Chems sound in general?
Innovative.
I think Chemical5 will hold true, a new sound will emerge.
I also agree with anType, I hope we get an 11-tracker. Actually, I wouldn't mind if neither TGP or GYH made it on, and we only got 10 tracks, that would be better in a lot of ways.

Hi everybody! X-D
Why couldn't it be a mixture between both, the old and the new? I love the way the brothers create breaking beats as well as their other electronical work. When you listen to any song of them you'll find this mix ("Come With Us", "Hey Boy Hey Girl", "The Test", "The Sunshine..." to name a few). Every time I hear there must be an essential new style (in general) I don't know why people liked it before.
It needn't to be borring at all if they maintain their way of music. And it isn't said that the new album have to sound like the ones before. You also don't stop listening to rock music (or anything else) because the band, whatever the name is, plays their "old" instruments or style. If you know what I mean? Or simply: classic music is just classic music (as an example). Of course when you're playing music it is important to invent new things and to think of what you can change or alternate concernig the music, that's clear (You don't want to listen the same album for 5 times).
I believe since Surrender the brothers have shown their variety. Because i like big beats (as I've already said many times) I would stand up for an album which contains a healthy balance bewteen. Stick on one style would be disappointing I guess.
Sorry if I bored you... :?

My only concern at the moment is whether they will make those sounds as hard as in CWU .. and I hope they will not. I think instruments sound a bit too sharp and loud in CWU ... must be that the chems have gradually lost some of their hearing ability (with all those gigs and everything) and like to compensate with brutal leveling. Now don't get me wrong, I think their musical abilities are still intact, but just a bit softer approach please (like on TGP and GYH).

I wish I were a fly on the wall in their studio so I could glimpse into the future! To be honest I don't know what I want to hear from the Chemicals. I know it seems strange... What I don't want is a Part 2 to any of their previous works, although I would think they'd draw inspiration and technique of their past achievements in order to develop their future. I just want to keep an open mind and not expect the new record to sound this way or that way. But going over the past 10+ years, I suspect they'll push foward their style and sound, and try new things but still keep that Chemical signature - just as they've done with each successive record. I'll just sit back and enjoy the ride (and pass judgement :P) when I hear the new record for myself.
soundertow, when you say you think the "instruments" sound too sharp on Come With Us, do you mean for example, Hoops? I ask, because I originally thought the acoustic guitar sounded a bit too dry, real out of place at first.

be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle

@ Soundertow Interesting that you should say that the instruments sounded a bit too sharp as the chems said in an interview that they concentrated hard on the high end of the frequency spectrum when makeing CWU as in previous albums they mainly concerned themselves withe the bass end so i think the higher frequencies register a lot more on CWU than they do on the other albums making it sound sharper/harsher :)
