Yes, i loved my first ipod very much. And my second one too. Now that one broke too, and now i'm done with ipod. As off today, i will go back to my Sony CDWalkman. And as it is almost 10 years old, it only plays original cd's.

People, the quality, i'm stunned by how good it sounds straight from the cd. On such on old device.

I say, lets all go back to original cd's!

Get a Sony Video Walkman, this thing rocks (especially since I got it for free!).

yeah i used to have a cassette player in my car. Takes me back to 02 when i was listening to live CWU shows while driving. you haven't heard hoops live til you've heard it on cassette. sorry to hear about your ipod. me personally, i just but the cheapest one for sale (excluding the shuffle), $150 every few years isn't so bad, you don't want to buy a $300 every time you need a new one..

Yeah i bought two already, the first one was when they just came out ( 400 euros! ) and the second one was about 300 euro's. Fuck that shizzle man, honesly, i'm done with it!

And the quality is so amazing straight from the cd. I am pleasently suprised!

Smart move Jeanie, iPods are grade-a shit. The best thing I ever saw was in my freshman year in college. I was walking down a side stair well in my dorm one day in '01, and on the wall, written in black marker, in perfect script, read "fuck your ipod". Exactly

My iPod is only used for car trips, now. The battery on it can't hold a charge whatsoever, anymore. But other than that, it's as right as rain. Generation 3, man. 2002. I guess they're so popular now, their production cost has gone down, and with that their quality.

CDs, of course, sound WAY better! They're not super compressed. MP3s are around 192 kbps while AIFFs are around 3000-4000 kbps. It's a pretty dramatic difference. Just trying hearing We Are The Night on vinyl - oh my god, what a difference even from CD!

I'm assuming you all had a case for you iPod and a lack of butterfingers?

It isn't surprising that CD's have "good" quality compared to just digital format (though they are the same thing). You either have lots of songs with low sample rates or low bit-rates.

Sure MP3s and AIFFs are both digital, it's just how much they're compressed, is all. Sorry for going off on a technical rant. =P

um.... aiff is 1400 kbps not 3000-4000.

I love people who hate ipods -- it makes me happy to see people "hate" material goods. :)

btw if you're listening to music on a portable player chances are you aren't listening on headphones that will reveal the compression fuck ups. I listen on MDR V700 and use lossless files or 256+ AAC (which is indistinguishable from lossless for most material).

if not... use mp3 CDs -- way more practical than regular cds.

I've had my 5th gen ipod for 2 years - absolutely no complaints with it. I use it everyday at gym and also when i'm working overtime. The sound quality is ok and it beats carting round a bag full of cd's.

Most of my AIFFs are 3000-4000. Weird.

This thread jinxed my ipod, for this morning it too, has died. Attempting to re-charge it through the wall socket rather than the computer and see if it can be revived. Prognosis is looking rather dim but I'm not terribly upset really.

Ah well. I still got my trusty old discman, and I got a pair of super nice ultimate ears earbuds for xmas.

leave it to drain completely for a couple weeks... then plug it in -- sometimes fixes things.

but what seems to be the problem exactly?

Yeah, some of these MIGHT be surround. I've been looking through the rest of them and most are lower. Maybe it's just a fluke, who knows.

As for dying iPods; let it drain, yeah. I've heard that charging it when it hasn't died completely lowers it's battery life. That, or it has a short in it somewhere like mine. The poor thing can't hold a charge for more than 30 minutes.
