Chemical Brothers, Glint Dj set @ Turnmills, 6 September 03
I love Turnmills, i have been going there for the last 6 years, but only in the last 2 years would i have called it my clubbing home. they have many good nights there like Release Yourself, City Loud (which 2 of my best friends play at(, the london home of the (Big Beat) Boutique, as well as Glint. and in years gone by it was the home of the Heavenly Jukebox (the larger and re-branded Heavenly Social). It's a club that has been around for a while, i think about 17 years. It doesn?t have the polished feel of every newish club that pops up in the UK. In fact Turnmills is the darkest and dirtiest club in london and thats how i like it!!! The Sound system in the club is also wicked and is the new lighting they have put in this summer. Turnmills is an intimate venue. and boy when it is a busy as it was on saturday you have to get used to the intimacy.
We arrived at turnmills at 11.30 and sailed straight in which was a result. Nathan Detroit was on the decks in the main room. i had never heard him play before. i dont know much about him, in fact i have only seen his name in conjunction Glint but he was quite entertaining. his style is very acidic, i suppose the clue is in his name (detroit techno??). At midnight the chems graced the decks. they started very much in a big beat style, back to there routes. one of there first tunes they played was their remix of Primal Screams 'Jailbird' and a couple of tunes later they were playing a mix of Prince's 'Controversy'. very in the spirit of the Heavenly Social, if its good music play it regardless of genre. After about 3/4 hour they settled into a more traditional chems dj set, very techno/acid noise. there was not many choons i recognised until 'Get Yourself High' was played. i love this tune and on a big rig it sounded awesome!! after that they mixed in The Micronaughts 'The Jazz', always a classic in there dj sets. we spent the best part of 3 hours in the main room until and they played a very well set orientated mix. but with a maxed out club we wilted and needed to gets some drinks and some fresh air.
After a short rest in the chill out area (i hate that description) we decided to go into the back room which had the feed from the main room sound system. wished we had done that earlier cos you could actually get those sneakers beating in that room!! and for the next 2 hours we were treated to the best of the chemically produced club output mixed with other tunes that fitted the vibe. it was quite magic, here we are celebrating there 10 years in the business and we are being give a history lesson!! unfortunately a few legs in our group could only last till 5 so we left with an hour to go. but i find doing the after party with your best friends every bit as important as going out to the main party. on the way home we stopped of to see David Blaine doing his 44 day starvation/incarceration at tower bridge. what a silly boy he is. fancy missing a night with the chemical brothers!!

8) Sneakerbeater, damn nice review! I loved reading it (and I got a chuckle out of the David Blaine bit too.) I liked your intro of Turnmills. It gave me an idea of what it's like and the history of it which is great for a person on the other side of the pond who hasn't experienced the ggrit grime and glory of Turnmills yet. Til 5 eh... dang! I don't think I'd be able to last that long either but then again, I'd be willing to forgo sleep for a long quality glint nite out with the Chems as hosts.
Thanks for posting, reading about your nite out was well worth the couple day wait.
And thanks for the setlist, it sounds brilliant!

sneakerbeater I've been going to turnmills to see the chems since the days of the social....don't think I've ever missed them play there....
not only were we in the back room (not enough bass but it beats the the usual rugby match on the main floor) all night but we be left after the chems finished to go and see and blaine!
I swear we must have exchanged grins at some point over the years!
loved the early part of the set with robotnik/controversey/grab the rope etc.....shame they didn't drop kittens

as for blaine what a c*** (not my choice of word, it's what most people are shouting at him). my friends and i went for another after clubbing visit this weekend. i dont know why, it's like watching paint dry.

Quote from the Depaul trust (London homeless charity):
"Blaine's hunger endurance test is an insult to the everyday struggle of Britain's homeless who experience the harsh conditions Blaine has chosen to endure as a stunt every day. The sight of a celebrity deliberately starving himself for the sake of a publicity stunt before returning to a life of luxury is far from edifying. The point we want to get across is that while Blaine has deliberately chosen to live in a box without food to demonstrate his willpower and stamina there are many people who endure the same conditions as Blaine everyday. They'll be bored and hungry just as he is but the difference is that they don't have a choice and its not a fixed term thing for them. The reality for thousands of homeless people is that their situation grinds on and on."
Makes you think doesn't it?

It does - makes me think of Paris Hilton doing that Simple Life show. Take a bratty rich spoiled girl who's never worked a day in her life and rides to fame on her last name - stick her in a small town and call it entertainment. She makes a mockery of people who obviously have less than her, people that actually have to work to make a living. I guess if that's what people want to watch, if that's the reality people want to see... :?
I admit, seeing Blaine pulling that stunt would have been just to say, "because I could". I still find it funny that sneaker (and now M'Chebne) saw Blaine after Turnmills, it makes for a great recap on a crazy night.
