I have a confession to make--I liked the first Harry Potter film (I'm 17). I've never read any of the books though. I'm gonna have to see Lord of the rings sometime, I still haven't seen it. :-//

Yeah I have a confession to make.

I've read all the Harry Potter books. Of course after I snubbed them and wrote them off as being a part of the kiddie "hype" that I refused to take part in. I finally decided to pick up the books and read them for myself. Those books taught me to never judge a book by it's cover. The Harry Potter books arent' Tolkien, but remind me of the Narnia Chronicles - enchanting to children as well as adults who loved fantasy books as kids, surprisingly well written, great characters, and a story line with room for growth.

Now Lord of the Rings. Great movie, one of the best movies in the fantasy genre I've ever seen. I can't wait for the Two Towers. I could write for hours on how much I liked the Fellowship of the Ring, and how it inspired me to go back and re-read the books. The length of the film wasn't bothersome (better it be longer than shorter, so as not to leave out too many details) although I had to make a couple quick trips to the little girl's room when I saw it opening night. It's ok though, I saw the movie in theaters 2wice more.

The extended version of LOTR in the new package that just came out for sale is a must have for anyone that likes the books or the film. There's extra footage in the movie that really enhances the story, and all the extra goodies like behind the scenes stuff and Tolkien history is insightful and quite enjoyable. Lord of the Rings was more than just your average films made for the sake of making money or having nifty special effects. Everyone involved was greatly inspired by the books, the history of the characters, the languages, and the social commentary in the story of the Lord of the Rings - and it shows. The Lord of the Rings movies were a labour of love.

whirlygirl, I saw 4DVD edition but I didnt get it yet.. is this the one with extended LOTR?? I have 2DVD edition but it's just original LOTR which I saw in cinema

Yes, the 4 disc set has the extra movie footage. It's great too, the footage is just added into the movie, not stuck at the end. I think the extra footage allows for better flow in the movie, adds more depth to the characters. I held off buying the 2 disc set because I knew the 4 disc set would've had so much more. (It was hard not to run out and buy the 2 discs when it first came out though, but that's what video rental stores are for. ;) )

With the holidays coming, I strongly recommend putting the 4 disc LOTR set on your wishlist!

Aw damn I didn't even think about region formats! I'm from the States, region 1. I know the extended DVD set is available in the UK (according to Amazon.com) but as far as availability anywhere else, I am unsure.

Yesterday I bought soundtracks for both movies...I dont really like it... Orchestral must is not something worth payin 10 pounds for

Scores for films are really an acquired taste - they are meant to accompany the images of film and when standing alone from those images, the music sometimes tends to lose something. I know film buffs who are totally into film scores and listen to scores regularly so I think it's a matter of opinion. But for me for example, the theme to Star Wars does loses a lot of impact without the accompanying film images. Not that the Star Wars theme is crappy (well ok, it sounded much more impressive when I was a little kid than it does now and it is played out to the point of cheesy) but how often would the average joe sit down and listen to a score? The images and the film score were meant to go together.

I suppose the same can be said about the Lord of the Rings soundtrack but what I liked about it is that the style and tempo and overall orchestration varied according to the scenes in the movie. It wasn't the same theme song rehashed and slowed down or sped up or cheesified throughout every scene in the movie. There were different 'movements' for different scenes, very much like there's different 'movements' in classical symphonies written by Beethoven or Handel - that was the whole intent so the LOTR score didn't sound like a typical movie soundtrack like Star Wars. For movie scores, I'd have to say the Lord of the Rings soundtrack is damn good. Do I listen to it regularly, no - I'd rather listen to it the way it was originally intended - accompanying the film.

Can you tell I'm excited about seeing the Two Towers on Friday? ;)

Why Friday? It came out today... (going to see it in a couple hours)
He put on a turn-down collar, a black bow, and wore his Sunday tail-coat. As such, he looked spruce, and what his clothes would not do, his instinct for making the most of his good looks would.

A couple of reasons. I have to work early the next day and the chances of me getting someone to watch my son is far greater on a Friday night than it is during the week. But if the powers of the universe weren't aligned against me, you bet yer ass I'd have already seen it twice by now! ;)

Let me know how you liked it!
