... you may or may not be aware of.
I've always liked Underworld, even saw them play once upon a time, but I never followed them religiously so this bit of trivia I'm about to relay is news to me. .
Some of you - yeah, I'm looking at you inchemwetrust - might remember the band Freur in the 80's. They had one song that got some airplay, called Doot Doot. 'memba the constant rotation on KROQ back when that station used to be listenable?
So anyway, stash was reading a book recently called The Dark Fantastic which is an authorized biography about the author Clive Barker. Apparently, Clive Barker scripted a movie aptly titled 'Underworld':
The Dark Fantasic wrote:
Touted as a 'high-fashion, fantasy-thriller', and set in the near-future London, Underworld, with its neon noir visuals and integration of rock music, was compared with the work of Michael Mann, whose television series Miami Vice was then at the height of its popularity; but Pavlou (one of the movie co-writers) had never seen the show. Synthrock band Freur, known for the hit single 'Doot Doot', was recruited to provide an electronic soundstrack and several original songs; its members even changed the band's name to Underworld in the wake of the project.
The footnotes of the biography go on to say:
footnotes wrote:
5. Although the end credits of the motion picture mention a soundtrack album by Freur on CBS Records, none was released. Vocalist/guitarist Karl Hyde and keyboardist Richard Smith have since found greater success as Underworld, and their music was featured in the motion picture Trainspotting (1996)
Sadly, the film Underworld sucked the big one but the project was enough to inspire Freur to go about changing their name to Underworld. It's just trivia (hey, trivia is a good ice breaker at parties) but I thought I would share.
