The SID chip is a synthesizer for old commandore 64/128 ( it seems as your computer don't have it) computers. Very good music has been made with it. It's very rare nowadays and expensive because they don't produce any more of 'em.
There is a hardware synth called SID-station that uses old SID chips.

The original Atari STs had a Yamaha chip that was so shite it was used in the later ZX Spectrums. :?
The STE had a much improved audio chip with stereo 8-bit PCM sound (which sounds shit by today's standards but was a big advance on what went before). The trouble is that not enough STEs were sold for games developers to bother writing software to take advantage of the better sound, improved graphics, hardware blitter etc, so it was a bit of a lame duck.
