So, a little bit ago I managed to catch Eric Prydz's Essential Mix from this year, which I highly recommend:

https://soundcloud.c...ential-mix-2013

A warning about it: Prydz is a bit more "generic" when it comes to electronic music, but if you allow that some of it is a bit (or a lot) not-quite-noteworthy but satisfying only on a basic level, there is something in it that's quite fantastic.

My question to you all is what experience you've had listening to Prydz. Some of his tracks are downright amazing, especially some of the tracks he's released as Cirez D (see, e.g., "On Off"). I first heard On Off on Simian Mobile Disco's 2010 Essential Mix and got a couple music boners when the set took a turn for the amazing during the middle of it during that track.

Some of Prydz's tracks are god-awful cheese, though (see, e.g., "Call on Me"). Maybe some of the popular tracks he's produced in the past are just a product of a fading sound of cheesy trance that are going out of style and I simply didn't like them because of my hipster-esque contrarian nature. But part of me really hates some of the anthems in general that some electronic music producers put out, particularly because they offer the depth of a parking-lot puddle, which is to say the illusion of depth. Maybe I just hate that it's so easily accessible--I'm not 100% sure.

But what it all comes down to is that I had a particularly amazing experience seeing him live a week and a half ago at his show here in San Francisco, and there is something god damn fantastic in the overall flow and peaks of his sets. The whole is greater than the sum of his parts. And I found myself grooving to some parts that I would have otherwise found a bit cheesy. In particular, I was kind of blown away by the mashup between one of his tracks called "Mirage" and an Empire of the Sun track.

Or maybe it was just the drugs...

He is clearly a talent but of course there will always be those music snobs who won't even give his other material a listen because of his mainstream hit "Call on Me". I enjoyed his stuff prior to that, and I admit it has tainted his name which is why I like the fact he has many pseudonyms. The fact is that he has composed some great tunes!

A few of us discussed Eric Prydz not too long ago. I described him as a hack and someone, possibly Iggy, suggested I examine a larger sample size of Prydz's work. I followed the advice and now admit some of his music and remixes are pretty good. I still believe he has a large share of "lowest common denominator" tracks, or "generic" as Pooter described it, but now I know there is always potential for something more than I expected from Prydz.

I'll try to check out the Essential Mix this weekend.
Gonna work it out...

@Satur8: The Essential Mix delivered. I think his newer sound is the best of the lowest-common-denominator, enough to bring it above it. :)

Well, I did enjoy the link of On Off you posted, Pooter. Very different from what we usually get to hear. But mostly I associate him with producing heavily over-sidechained tracks like Call On Me. He did a remix of Midnight City of M83's latest (and brilliant!) album in the same vein as Call On Me and it instantly turned me off (probably the above mentioned On-Off is best to describe his style :D). But then again, it could be viewed as his trademark... which, for the most part, I don't really enjoy.

Do you have more samples at hand that show his other musical face?

Check out his most recently released track called Power Drive. Has a slight amount of cheese intact, but I do love it.

In 2009 Sebastian Leger did a sort of legal bootleg / cover of Marilyn Manson's The Beautiful People. It was called The People and was released on the Pryda Friends label. And on the AA side, Mr Prydz turned in a remix which bore little resemblance to the original - it was much better. I have this in my 12" collection and was in no way embarrassed to purchase this in a record shop where other people could see!

Hero! Thanks :D I've been trying to find it for ages, Shazam said it was by Deadmau5 but I knew that was wrong as it sounded like Pryda.

This is apparently an unreleased Prydz track... it's ripped from the essential mix linked above.

I was really excited to see Prydz at Future last weekend, I thought it was pretty sweet, although it didn't go down that well. Wrong place wrong time. Would have been magic in a club at 2am :)
Further Remixed There's nothing else...

Was it outdoors in the afternoon or something?
