Bedroom DJ (First time out)

I have not been DJing for that long (half a year or so), but on Saturday it will be my first real go, it is only a house party but there will be quite a lot of people there, I am a little bit nervous but I don?t care that much because I just want to have fun with it, the one bad thing is that we are using someone else?s mixer which I have never used but I think I will be able to adapt it, but the best thing is that it will be on a big PA system and I will be able to hide my mistakes, which hopefully there will not be many of.
I have a set all worked out, but I need to practise it a bit and make it not seem as planed as it is.
Anyway, has anybody good some good advice for me?
Thanks
Pringled.

Of course I have honoured the chemical brothers twice, once with come inside and again with the Pete Hellers remix of Star Guitar, apart from that there my main stream stuff from miss Kittin, Moby, Felix da housecat, daft punk I have also included John Tejeda, Jay C, Peaches, Vitalic, it all goes together quite well.

Well my advice would be to just go with the flow - try not to plan your set cos that might not be the right direction for the night and you'll generally have more fun mixing an unplanned set. But since it's your first gig I'll let that one slide! 8)
I planned my first proper set too so you won't be the first DJ to do that!
BTW, what Vitalic stuff are you gonna play? I've been wanting to track down 'La Rock' for feckin ages - you don't happen to ahve a copy do you? 8O

the main thing i learnt from house party's is don't go too deep and try and play a bit of what people know.
the tricky thing with house parties is it can be a real diverse selection of people - try and take as bigger range of records as possible and dont be afriad to try different things out!
when i played in manchester at the weekend i took a wide selection but was expecting to play fairly fluffy house tunes. i played them for a bit and everyone looked bored, so i banged it out a bit and they all loved it!! weirdness, but it just goes to show u can never be sure what there gonna want.

Don't worry to much about the mixer, they're all the same essentially - gain, crossfader and headphone mix, it's all you need really. If you're lucky they might even chuck in EQ. 8)
You'll do fine mate, like everyone has said - stick to well known stuff to get cred, and don't stick to the same genre.

yeah don't overplan things. All the mixers basically have the same functions like eq,crossfade, cue just a little different setup. my advice be on time, look confident, make a couple of mix tapes and hand it out to the crowd people love free stuff and plus it's good self promotion. ;-)
good luck

I know what you mean pringled, ive played at a few bars before, that often have different equipment, dont be afraid to ask the guy where the headphone mix is or whatever, your not a fucking mind reader, what i always found a bitch was having to select the individual channels on some mixers i never knew where i was!!!But you get used to it. I hated it cos i learnt to mix on belts (yuck!!!) and i was going into bars and clubs having to use technics 1210's that are completely different, basically u have to learn how to mix again before the end of the first tune you've played!
Yea in terms of records, you need to vary it a bit, i still think you should play for yourself not just the crowd, i mean wheres the fun in playing records u dont particularly like that much??? be a bit cute drop a few cheeky tunes, i had a party round mine last summer and got the decks out in the garden, i played missy eliot - get your freek on (superchumbo mix) and it went right off, i loved it cos it was a wiked dirty house track and they loved it cos they like the original to which it is similar.
to start i think u shud keep the mixing simple, the first mix is often the hardest to nail, but when you nail the first 1 your confidence jyust builds and builds, u can then have more fun picking which records to play cos the mixing is not such a big issue, some times i get to that level and i get a bit cheeky dropping acapellas and shit. Dont worry bout your mixing, your not in a nightclub people havent spent their hard earmned cash to come and see you play the tightest set, relax, chop records in and out, no one will care, if they say owt, ask them if they can mix!!! tell them to come and take over!!!they ll soon shit em selves!!!
Have a beer or two, and enjoy it
8) if sure you'll rock it!!! 8)
