I couldn't find the old Gear talk topic. Let's start a new one for me and Biff to post on, and the others to read and watch without understanding half of what we say !

Today's thought : Why are so many great VSTs a pain in the ass to use ? Today I tried a few VSTs from a so-called "Top 10 of all time" VSTs list. More precisely : z3ta+ and Albino 3.

They sure sound amazing, but why oh why are they so much a pain in the ass to use ?

The most annoying thing is when there is no Init program. I never use presets (98% of the time). When I use a synth/VST, I build my sounds from scratch or don't use them at all. So having only very complex presets is no good, when you have to set everything to 0 before you start having fun with the synth, especially when the VST is complex and you don't know what is where.

Oh, thanks for the mention, much appreciated! I just wished I would have time to carry on with music.

The albino has some decent sounds but is indeed a bit unhandy to tweak.

But I have to admit, that I pretty much use presets to musically form initial ideas or basically start from there and adjust them to what I like them to sound like later on. I am fairly unpatient guy and just can't be bothered most of the time to set up all the virtual synths on from scratch. I know, I know, presets are for the weak but there you go...It would be more fun to do on a real analog vintage, oldschool synth or rather on a sweet modular (like here http://www.youtube.c...v=FLljyZ2ojbA).

But sometimes you really want a certain sound and you keep trying to get it out of a VST which indeed can be fun (and a pain in wherever you want it to be.

Isn't it?! I love how passionate he is about this synth and how eager he is to explain the audience what it's capable of doing.

I've been told that Noisia make all of their big motherfucking bass (example http://www.youtube.c...ZQYyRHg&t=1m20s ) with the Albino 3.

Yes! Love this topic. I got a somewhat well paying job over a year ago so I've been able to got lots of music stuff, mostly going the modular route. VSTs can be a massive pain, I find I don't have the attention span for them.

I just did a nice sounding 8bit preset !
Just two Saw waves, one at +5 semitones, and a square lfo at 1/32 rate modulating the pitch at +3semitones.

EDIT :
OH ! and Korg just updated its Korg Legacy collection. Well not really but now you can buy each softsynth for 49$, or all of them for 199$

The MS20 and MonoPoly are worth every cent.

Korg beats around the bush too much with their classic stuff, wish they'd consider how well moog has done being loyal to analog. Korg has released a ms10 for the nintendo ds, the legacy collections, the USB ms20 controller, digital/analog modeling synths that pay homage to the ms series, an iPad ms20, the monotron ($1.00 to build analog goodness), tshirt reprints of their old synths, and I'm probably forgetting a few, and yet they could probably build a new ms20, make it analog with presets like the minimoog voyager and make a killing! Look at the minimoog xl, basically the love child of a minimoog and semi-modular formatt if the ms20. I'm not trying to be an analog snob buy they need to expand their choices rather than make 5 variation of the ms2000.

Amen to that. But those VSTs are damn good though. I made 90% of my sounds with that these last 2 years.
But the iPad/DS/Monotron stuff is more a gadget to do Lady Gaga covers on YouTube than a real usable instrument.

Biff have you tried the Mini Kaoss Pad by the way ? I was considering getting one.

No but radiohead uses them extensively live, which is a good sign. I'll probably get one some day..

I got my monotron today, truly the greatest thing korg has released in 10 years. So raw (aka out of tune in a charming way)!

Yes indeed, good rough resonance as the MS series is known for. Going to try to modify it to work with my modular next

Hey analog nerds!

I'm considering buying my first analog since I'm getting pretty bored of tweaking knobs on a computer screen.

My budget is quite limited, about 500€.

I've read good reviews about these synths :
- Doepfer Dark Energy
- Vermona Mono Lancet
- Mopho

What do you think guys?

Sorry, I know next to nothing about actual gear.

But I just wanted to drop by and renew my love for Biff's studio. F*ckin' ace setup, man. He's on his way to having the mothership in his own domain!!!!

the Mopho is the most "complete" synth, on the three you cited. The Doepfer and Vermona are very limited compared to it. The drawback of the Mopho, assuming you talk about the tabletop version, is that you only have 8 knobs, and have to go through menus to edit a sound. If you have more money to put, take a Mopho Keyboard, or around the same price, you can even have a second hand Moog Little Phatty, or for a little less, a Slim Phatty that doesn't have a keyboard.

I'm in exactly the same situation. What Ben J says is right, the Mopho does have most options. But I'm not that impressed by the sound clips I've heard

I've been really attracted to the Doepfer though, the clips sound great and I think if you're gonna go analog, it nice to not have to menu dive, just have everything there
