Tell me about your experience, I may be able to explain, but most likely the answer will be is that railway senior managers are either (a) clueless, (b) too far up their own arses to listen to people who know more than them, or both. It is also possible that the station announcers are living on their own planet (if Leeds station announcers are anything to go by) and don't keep up with whats going on.

Yeah it was just a lack of info, and I don't blame you ;-) The thing that hurts the most is that because of ONE train our whole holiday dream was destroyed.
