Chemical Brothers Live At The Ultra Music Festival 2011

I expected a shortened setlist since this was a festival. Because most times I've seen the Chems at festivals, I try not to become too hung up on set lists and expectations. Don't Think just let it flow... From a first-person perspective I am curious how the music played out at Ultra and how it touched the audience. So I am looking forward to reviews and thoughts both great and small, good and bad and whatever lies in between.

never mind about missing hanna tracks. it's "just" an OST, nothing to expect when they're playing a festival really.
they did play superflash, and golden path lyrics...

You actually got to go see them live, be happy. Some of us don't get that opportunity.
Well actually i didn't know those songs were in the encore till now cause i didn't look at a lot of the set list from the past shows,
but i did find out (by accident) when looking through forum that there was the snow/STA mix and they played TPPR, so i was really REALLY excited to hear that and been anticipating it for almost 3 months and forcing myself not to listen on youtube.
But i didn't mean that the show sucked. I just thought they should have incorporated the encore within the show, and maybe played some Container Park. Personally, i feel since there encore is that amazing well it shouldn't be in the encore cause it really does blow for the fans who see them at most festival's and theres not enough time for an encore.
I think it would have been cool if they opened the show with Snow/STA and ended with TPPR, block rockin beats didn't do much for me.
Also feel that when they play festivals they shouldn't have as long transitions and build ups as they do in a show of just themselves, they should focus on playing the song, and fitting a few more in, cause some of them were long which i don't mind but they could have fit K+D+B or what ever somewhere.
Superflash was a really cool song though, those kid clowns R cccrrreeeaaapppyyy! haha
Anyway, im not like super bummed, i just think it should have been played differently.

I believe you're right, Champi. A tweet from KngtRdr later on said he thought he might have been wrong on the whole Chico's Groove thing (might have been Tom fuckin around, as he said)

Thanks for helping clear that up! I'm glad you didn't think the show sucked (phew!)
I do feel ya on the truncated festival shows. There's so much for the Chems (and any band that's squeezed into a restricted time slot) to pack in such a small amount of time. Something has to give - I'm sure there's no easy way around it. The Chems would play full sets for their fans if they could! To me there's so much magic going on when the Chems are building up and tearing down a song as it is being transitioned. If they ripped through one song right after the other it would feel rushed and phoned in. I don't know if omitting transitions would be the answer... I haven't heard or seen the new festival set up yet in its entirety but I'm not so I'll just shut up now, haha!

Those new snow lyrics are the gorgeous!!! Sounds like that they used a some kind of vox synthesizer for it, pretty sure it wasn't sung by a real person...
Does anyone know the name of the synthesizer or what gadgets they used to make the new snow lyrics????????
Would really like to get one just like it...

For me to have been able experience them in an completely electronic music festival would of been too great for me to be upset about what songs were played or their total set time.. I am grateful im able to see them twice in less than a years time. hooray

But then again, I'd probably be bummed to if I went!
Last year @ the bowl, we didn't get an encore, so I would assume that they can make it up at Coachella this year! But then again, a show's a show!
But at least you embraced the 3 days of awesome music that came your way!

When did guettas set end?
I don't blame the Bros, it could of been a couple of things why there was no encore.
1) Ultra drew up the contract specifying that the Chems would be done at a certain time (which was 10:30-12:00)
2) Maybe the Chems didn't feel like playing the encore because maybe they weren't 'feelin' it was the right time, or some other reason. Maybe they felt it wouldn't impact the crowd.
3) Maybe they forgot to do the encore! Maybe when Ed and Tom got back to their hotel room after the show, they said to themselves 'FUCK....we didn't do the encore!'

I highly doubt they forgot to do an encore but the mental theater "oh fuck we forgot" is rather amusing, heh.

First off Ultra was awesome all around, VIP was well worth the money.
Steve Aoiki is fun. Carl Cox still owns. Guetta actually sucked, really bad.
The Chemical Brothers are men amongst boys. Not even going to talk about not having an encore, could care less, I will see them by themselves again.
They KILLED that show, destroyed every Dj and live act in my opinion. It was louder, harder, and more insane than anything that came before it. I have seen them in NY countless times, and in London, but I never had more fun at a Chem show, shortened set and all.
Don't Think and Escape Velocity were the most mental, dominating tracks played all weekend. Holy shit is Don't Think awesome live.
There were Chem virgins around me on the floor; I loved looking at the expression on their faces during Saturate/Believe.
Anyone else that was there, can you ID the track with the light bulbs/sirens/fruit visuals? I don't think I heard that before.
