I suppose they could do much worse than Kylie, like Westlife.

I said it once months ago, I'll say it again. In all due fairness to pop music, it definitely has its place in the music. A lot of pop I can do without, as some of it has no long lasting appeal, no long term playability - but some of it's good while it lasted. But it's not up to me to decide whether or not it's a good thing for other people. Music can be so fickle, like fashion, and it applies to the audience too. The thing is trying to pin down what is pop exactly, what makes a successful pop record - what musical qualities are in pop that have such a mass appeal if even for a short while? What makes it tick? I don't think there's anything wrong with artists wanting to explore what makes pop music tick, I've grown up and watched other bands explore those avenues, but the fans may feel the exploration is done at their expense, and voila, the band is labelled a sell out or whatever. I just think in the end it's up to the artist to do what they feel is right or it won't be a representation of their art. They're the ones behind the creativity anyway.

Interesting about Ed implying about all music becoming one, and chemicalreaction talking about musical fusion. That's a chin-stroker, and fusion is the reason why we've got so many different kinds of music to choose from imo. I've long felt that the Chemical Brothers have fused styles (and for lack of a better word, genres) to get the desired effect that makes their music unique. Music becoming "one" is an admirable and somewhat idealisitic goal on the part of the musician - not bad at all, it's pretty cool to have that outlook, but seeing as an artists success has a lot to do with the audience climate is something else that can be beyond their control. Lots of people are so particular about which music they listen to, some of them shut themselves off to other kinds of music. About the oneness - It's something they can try to do, it would be an awesome feat, but whether or not the masses are willing to accept it with open arms is something else entirely. But then again, maybe they are in a comfortable place and confident enough that allows them to take thse kinds of risks. Or maybe I'm blowing smoke out me ass. ;)

reminds me of alan braxe's A+B remixes of "anticipating" by britney spears. excellent work. i think the real test of skill always comes with taking the unfamiliar and making it "yours", they did it real well here.
