I was very glad when McCain controlled the crowd; it's better late than never. And like Whirls, I too wish that his show of character and strength had prevailed throughout his campaign.

Sarah Palin should be glad she can go back to doing what she does best: hunkering down like a paranoid redneck and looking out for Russians invading her backyard!

Yes, both speeches were amazing last night.

Obama's speech was legendary and I am so glad I stayed up for it (east coast guy here). His words will be remembered, replayed and read time and time again, serving as a true marker for all of history to remember.

McCain's speech was surprisingly gracious and sincere. Unlike Whirly, I am glad his speech last night stood apart from his campaign. Had he run the whole race like that we may have had a much closer outcome (regardless of the Palin situation). Perhaps the Republicans will learn a lesson from this or maybe even from Obama's run and victory, although I doubt it.

Obama ran a good, solid race and took the high road at every opportunity. I believe that he is sincere and I know he can help this country, and in turn, help the world. His team is already at work today preparing for their future, our future. This is a monumentally important day and I can only describe the emotion I am feeling as hope.

He's a man of principal, and a fearless leader! I couldn't be more proud!

Thanks President Elect Barack Obama!

Maybe next time Mr. Nader! hehe!

All good stuff. I sat up and watched all the coverage from UK, and was a warm fuzzy feeling at 4am when the CA polls closed and the moment hit. For you guys, my comparison is when Labour got back in power after the disaster that was Thatcher and the Tories. First time that a generation felt empowered about politics, and had hope. Long may it continue.

Both Obama and McCain speeches were statesmanlike - as you've said, if McCain had stuck to his guns throughout the campaign as he has his career, there may have been a difference.

Anyway, hope the new start continues. Enjoy!

it's wiered just how much coverage and for how long the US Presidency gets coverage in the UK, concidering that our coverage for PM seems to last a week or two at most (maybe an exageration).

Well done to america and americans for having something to be proud of in a long time, hopefuly your global image will gain some credibility once again.

I just hope that Obama does shine but don't forget that he is a politician, and that everything he does has to be conducive (capital wise) to the US Government and Economy, so that does mean maintaining a strong military presense!

But hopefuly this is the change the world needs.

Anyway as i haven't properly watched TV or listened to the radio in 2years i don't have a particualy strong or objective opinion on the subject so there's my $2 so i'll shut up.

A week ago now but pleased for Obamae, he's an awesome speaker and seems to have some good policies and people behind him. Have a lot of time for McCain though, I like how as a senator he's gone against his own party on issues he feels strongly about. I thought the "old man" jokes were a bit unfair tbh. As written by the Economist however Obama has "out-thought, out-organised and and out-performed" his rival.

Anyways, wish UK politics were as exciting lol.

I think McCain might have brought more to the presidency than his campaign might have portrayed, but the fact remained that his judgment was questioned when he chose Palin for a running mate and his perception questioned when he changed his position on how he thought the economy was doing within twenty-four hours.

What's exciting is that, in the end, Americans finally had a good and clear choice to make in order to further this country, and even the world, and that choice involved a historic precedent.
