ask G Dubya,he's the shock and awe man...........why do americans always need stupid names for things,are they that stupid they cant remember something without a stupid name??(NO offence whirleygirl,you seem very intelligent,which is a first for a yank!) ;-)

Yes, it's true. Americans must have nicknames for everything. I was just talking about this with my husband. Names are concocted like Mrs. Anthrax and Dr. Germ and Chemical Ali: like they are evil villians from a superhero comic book. But we don't have a comic book for this yet, so we've got playing cards instead. And to go along with those supervillian characters, we've got snazzy operation/war names like the ones you mentioned, and oxymorons like "friendly fire" and "collateral damage" to excuse wartime mishaps. As for Shock and Awe, I think it was on BBC news while it was happening when a reporter slipped and called it Blitzkreig.
