I think the Chemical Brothers are the best in breaking up beats. I really like the breakbeats and big beats like Setting Sun, Block Rockin' Beats and especially The Private...
I hope the brothers don't became more 'n' more mainstream band means that their newer songs are a bit too housy and their beats sometimes a bit too straight you know(boom boom boom) like It began in africa or rather the whole Come With Us album (despite of this i also like it, The test is the best track I ever heard). But I wouldn't be annoyed if they create those broken beats or a mixture of both (remember the track Come with us in the 3rd minute) in their next album ;-) .

I think it's safe to say, since we're all Chemical fans, that we're fans of big beat in some way. ;)
I like big fat thumping beats, really full and really fun. It's why I have a soft spot for Fatboy Slim. But what I like particularly about the way the Chemicals utilize big beat per se is that they incorporate these great melodies and lots of layers of sound so in the end you're listening to something really huge. The beat is the driving force but not always the focal point of the song - good for diversity, it gives the melody(s) more room to breath and it can allow for a more housy feel if that's the angle they're taking.
I know Come With Us was a hard record for some people to swallow but I like that the Chems are trying new things with their style. Not everyone's gonna be pleased all the time, I think they are aware of this. I thought It Began In Afrika was really fresh, I liked the earthy drums and the congas and the track is still slamming and huge on a loud system. The big beats are there... I think if they stuck with making nothing but big beat in the style of Exit Planet Dust for the rest of their record making careers, people would've gotten bored and so would they. I think the boys are talented enough if they wanted to revert back to their roots or whatever, they'd be able to take on a new angle to keep things fresh.
I'll say "fresh" again, just for good measure. ;)
On that note I'm excited about this new record. So close yet so far away!!!

Oh yes, I totally agree with your opinion that the guys want to try out new things. And that's better than to rest on the same music style for all the time. But i'm loving breakin' beats. Apart from this there is no question about their talent to create great atmospheres by experiment with new sounds or spacey effects and to form a good melody from it.
On the other hand I'm also with you when you say the beats are not the main part of a song (but a very important). I can't say that any track the brothers have made is borring. Every time (or nearly) you have an incredible interesting sound, not that stereotype of electrobeat you can sometimes listen in radio or the charts you know (Do you know "Scooter"?). They have an unmistakeable sound/drive. I have the feeling the chems love making high detailed music and you get the impression they don't do it just for money but rather for themselves and their understanding of electronical music, that's what I like.

Maybe we should start our moaning right now because the Chemical5 will surely not be strictly big beat. Everybody could write angry comments with a lot of exclamation marks and really let the steam out. By the time the album is released we would all be happy and anxious again. ;-)
We can't lose on this one, either everything goes like I wrote here or we get those big beats back with a vengeage! X-D

So that's the only good thing Tony Blair has given to GB during his time as Prime-minister.
Why the Amsterdam connection?
You can smoke weed everywhere in the Netherlands.
And not everybody in Amsterdam smokes weed.
Ok she can smoke weed every day for that matter but that's not sure.
When I was a bit younger I did smoke the weed.
But now I've stopped doing this.
And I hate it that every time I bring up that I'm from the Netherlands everybody is saying:
"oooh the Netherlands, that is that country with Amsterdam in it"
"you can smoke weed legally"
"is it true that you can buy weed at a local supermarket????"
and then I've to explain that you buy it in coffeeshops and that not every Dutchmen is a weed-smoker.
But smoking weed is ok but after sometime it bores you and then you stop smoking it.
A Heineken for that matter. I'll have one(or some more) of those everyday. Cheers

the amsterdam connection is cos i think iggy punk is falling for jeanie.
i know not every one smokes weed in the NL. thats probably why the system works, cos it's legal the novalty has been removed. and when we talk about visiting you beautiful country we say amsterdam, cos thats where we all go!!!
i think the legalization of dope has bought a lot of tourisium to your country, which on the whole is a good thing. the only bad thing about amsterdam is what i think you call the 'junks' who hassle you to buy their drugs and try to mug you. but in every capital city there are bad people trying to take advantage of the clueless traveller.
i love amsterdam, but i probably would not have visited it if it wasn't for the 'novalty value' of the coffee shops. don't take offence, we know your not all dope smoking mong heads!!! as a rule its the british who act like children in a toy shop when they visit NL!!!
just as a side note, there is a british comedian called harry enfield who took the mickey outta of your police force and how tollerant your country is. in the sketch he is dressed as a police man in the red light district saying "in amsterdam we used to have a problem with prostitutes, but since we legalized it, it's been no problem' it's probably more funny if you saw it on the telly!!!

Yes sneaker, I understand what your saying.
I was a "user" once so I know how relaxed it can be to use.
So I promote the Netherlands to everybody who want to use.
But please mind there is only a small minority of the people that are users.
And the users are spread all over society.
In the coffeshops, you can see businessman, students, housewifes, etc.
So come all to the Netherlands to smoke your pot, hashish, cannabis, grass or joint (or whatever you want to call it). But don't generalize the Dutch people.
About the amount: officially you can only carry on the streets what you can use yourself in one day. (so do not buy 20kilo's ;-) )
But normally the police aren't that strict.

Whoa, who would expect my little comment to escalate into this.
I'm guessing when you're at a chems gig it's better to be high? I don't know, I like to be merry on alcohol when i'm listening to music at a concert, that way I can't feel the pain that the loud speakers are causing to my ears.
Me and me mate Dave planned to go Amsterdamn for a year, but we were both pissed at the time, and it never happened haha.
