My favourite gig is probably Cologne, Germany in february although Werchter was real good aswell but had real bad weather.

Reminds me of the first time I saw them, at the sister festival in Torhout about 7 years ago. It poured down with rain that day and there was nowhere to shelter, we were stood out on this hillside among rivers of mud flowing down between our feet!

I enjoyed them much more in Santander this summer, topping the bill at 2 am! I jumped so much I wrecked my knee, but it was worth it!

They're not playing the BDO next year are they? ARE THEY? I can't see them listed in the lineup. Do you have inside information? Are you taking the mickey? Do I have reason to panic? Oh well...

Ciao bella.

Came across this review of Push the Button and thought it was actually a decent and fair attempt. Actually addresses the album on its own terms and in terms of continuity with their body of work and dance music in general. Positive, yet not gushing, it's a balanced review. Who knew?

----

When the big beat boom gradually subsided, the Chemical Brothers initially sought refuge within a carefully crafted version of house music both epic and psychedelic. Still, the duo are fusion fans at heart, and their fifth studio album, Push the Button, finds them easing back to their true love -- pulverizing stylistic boundaries while they seek out clever hooks to hang their production caps on. The first half of the record is heavy on collaboration, beginning with the clear highlight, "Galvanize," which features guest Q-Tip riding a delicious mid-tempo groove and the brothers teasing out an ingenious Middle Eastern string sample over the course of several breakdowns and over six minutes. "The Boxer" has ChemBros veteran Tim Burgess of the Charlatans UK coming on like an extroverted Steve Miller, while the next track, "Believe," features Britpop newcomer Kele Okereke (of Bloc Party) agonizing over an energized electroshock production composed of equal parts Prince and Chicago acid house. It's clear the Chemical Brothers are still searching restlessly for new sounds and new fusions; only they could alternate a polemical hip-hop track -- "Left Right," a guest spot for Anwar Superstar, who, incidentally, may be the younger brother of Mos Def, but sounds like he's been living in Jay-Z's head for a few years -- with a feature for an indie band, the Magic Numbers ("Close Your Eyes"). Obviously, it's far more refreshing to explore new territory rather than merely go back over old ground; while "Come Inside" suffers by aping their 1997 approach, the subsequent track, "The Big Jump," finds the pair energized with a fresh gloss on their patented sound (although it is easy to notice how the skronky guitars in the background are clearly a post-electroclash development). While there aren't as many heart-stopping productions as on 2002's unjustly neglected Come With Us, Push the Button proves the Chemical Brothers have retained the innate curiosity necessary to keep them blazing trails for years to come. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

That's a pretty good article given that it approaches it in an open-minded perspective and isn't just going down or up on the album, or making constant irrelavant references to 50-cent like those "critics" in rolling stone.

I think the his criticism about "Come Inside" was though-provoking for me, I didn't really associate it with the DYOH era but it does have that rough sound to it with a catchy bass line. To me has actually made me appreciate the song more, whereas before it was one of my lesser favorites on the album... It's not that I though it was bad, I love it, but it was up against some pretty tough competition.

actually a well balanced review, but i don't know about "Come Inside". Why aping, in which direction? And why shouldn't they sound like DYOH at some point? As an artist you don't open your drawer and put your "old" things in. That's what the brothers have in their venes, that's not a matter of nostalgia rather a musician feeling, i think. It's a kool rocking and fresh piece of music nothing else . . . Can't stand these discussions about sounding similar to previous works . . . What should i say to rock bands or jazz combos, don't they use the same instruments all the time, do they? And do they sound worse because of that? I think you know the answer . . .

Yeah, one of the better reviews I've seen of the album. I think an album should be reviewed on its own merits rather than constantly comparing it to earlier works, I think the critic has pretty much pulled it off.

i think it was because it hadn't much commercial success or the simple way of thinking of lots of reviewers, it must be new new new and toooooootally different otherwise it isn't a good release at all... bullshit as you all know . . . Maybe they thought they would re-invent themselves in each new album or whatever . . . Do so painters? (for instance)

Yeah i kinda love that album it has such a unique sound (as all of them) though I wasn't enthusiastic about it at first, but it grew on me very fast . . .what speaks for itself: quality

I did not care much for Come With Us when I first heard it (I downloaded before the album came out, shameful I know) I did enjoy The Test - which I can't live without - It Began In Afrika and Galaxy Bounce but my initial impression was that the album didn't seem to flow right and the songs didn't gel with me right away. All their other albums had a cohesive feel while this album didn't. At first. It took me a few listens to really get into it, or to start to get into it I should say.

I think with this album I was expecting something different but even after all this time, I couldn't tell you exactly what I was expecting. Maybe I was expecting more of the same... I really don't know and it doesn't matter now.

I've never been happier to eat my nasty, initial remarks I made about Come With Us.

That album taught me how to grow to love something, to just let go and expect the unexpected with open ears.

Woah, woah, woah..... thought you were talking about anal there for a second. Had to read back through the thread to realize we're talking about the Chems, though I suppose same rules apply. I was getting a little hot and bothered for a minute!

I did the same thing :( . But I still bought the album the day it came out. My first ever post in the chemical brothers forum was actually saying I didn't think that was their album. That was because there was that stupid trance version of It Began In Afrika that was out there.

That album is definitly a "grower" because it wasn't cohesive while not feeling like surrender (which is as mixed up as an album can be I think). I think the fact that the album was really made differently than the previous three made it tough to enjoy right away. But I would say now it's a classic and Hoops is still the shit, wooo! (that's my trl girly scream).

I give that critic huge props for pointing out how neglected come with us was.

one aspect i've learned through the time is almost every time i listen to them i hear new structures, sounds and patterns i wasn't aware before, that's pretty cool when you were able to see my fat laughing face when noticing such things (something new again, kool!). Because i'm still a huge bigbeat and breakbeat fan i was expecting something like DYOH but as you sad, it doesn't matter nowadays... Although, i'd like to hear some new breaky songs (Please Ed&Tom, at least one or two should be ok X-D )

No no, that's thing about the brothers, they could produce what ever they want it seems to catch me all the time . . .
