I run a Chemical Brothers group on Last.FM which currently has 379 members. I don't know if you know what Last.FM is but basically it's a pretty cool site that streams your favourite tunes and suggests new stuff based on what you like.
Anyway, I've had a couple of really pushy PMs in the past couple of days from one Alexis Bauchain who describes herself (Alexis is usually a female name, isn't it?) as "the manager of Astralwerks records on LastFM".
This is the message I received on Tuesday:
"I am the manager of Astralwerks records on LastFM and we planned to make a special promotion for the Chemical Brothers , so I would really appreciate that you give me leadership for this group in order to be able to communicate with the members and involve them in our team by giving them free stuff to promote the band !
Thanks in advance,
Best Regards,
Alexis Bauchain
Astralwerks Records"
Now there's a few things in there, such as punctuation errors and some slightly odd phrasing, which makes me suspect that this is a phishing attempt.
Last night I had a follow-up attempt, which was even pushier:
"HI ,
Did you received my previous message because my demand is quite pressing"
Again, note the odd use of language - "my demand is quite pressing" indeed. Tom and Ed, if this person is really from Astralwerks, you might like to replace them with someone who has a better grasp of English.
Again, I'm pretty sure that this is someone *impersonating* an Astralwerks employee rather than the real thing.
If it really *is* someone from the record company, do they have your authorisation to make such approaches to people running fan sites? I'm more than happy to help out in promotions but I don't really see how it is necessary to hand over control of a group in order to do so...
Hope you can look into this.
Thanks.
