I don't think there is any one source of where the images of space aliens comes from, but there's been a lot of hype about it since the 1940's and especially with Roswellian incidents that sparked an interest in Hollywood. And let's also not forget one of the best stories involving hostile extraterrestrials, War of the Worlds by HG Wells - his description of space invaders does not fit the description of alien images of today we have burned into our minds from hollywood and television. Also the word "alien" wasn't used to personify extraterrestrials way back when - the word Martian was used, since all space aliens are from Mars, riiiiight? ;)
Except when I think of the word "martian" I think of my favorite cartoon character Marvin the Martian, but that's because I watched far too many cartoons as a kid.
