Hi all,

this is a query for all you iPod owners out there! I've only recently got an iPod and have struck a (minor) problem. When I listen to DJ mixes on my iPod, there is a slight pause between tracks, which kind of ruins the fluidity of a mix as it segues between tracks.

Normally, when copying a CD for example, I would solve this problem by selecting the 'disc at once' option which cuts out any silent gaps between tracks. However, I can't seem to find a similar function in iTunes for the iPod.

Does anyone know how I can solve this problem? I know I'm a bit daft to be bothered by this little pause, but I'm sure I'm not the only one to find this a little annoying!

I appreciate any advice on this!

Cheers! :D

A DJ mix isn't meant to have its tracks separated. It always ruins the whole piece. Rip your CDs again as one-track mp3s, then your problem will be solved. There's no other solution up to my knowledge.

yeah I figured that might be the only way :(

Pretty daft really - I wonder if apple will update their software to account for this problem :?

Does anyone know of any good iPod forums where I might be able to find out more about this kinda thing?

Cheers! :D

I think all lossy formats include the tinyest of pauses at the end of a song - I don't know why - it's not a problem with apple or the ipod. If you burn say Push the Button on to CD from mp3 source (using nero's remove silence between tracks) you still get a little gap.

Only by using wav can you remove it - you can remove it from the mp3 in a wave editor but it will put it back again if you save it as an mp3.

Also, playing large files on an ipod isn't wise - when you play short files it transfers them to the cache on the hard disk so that they can play without the actual drive spinning, but when you play a big file the drive is spinning constantly, which wastes battery life.

I don't think you can avoid the little pause between the tracks. iTunes sucks for that. Even when you skip a track while it's playing, it won't fade into the other like in Winamp. When you burn mixed cds, it's the same, even though you choose the 'no blank between tracks' option in the Preferences, there'll still be a short blank. :(

And you can also go to the official Apple iPod support forum for more help. ;-)

Bugger! So it sounds like I'm not inherently naive and overlooking an obvious solution as I had hoped! :(

Does anyone know about the default format iTunes uses when ripping tracks to iPod which is called 'AAC'? Does anyone know if this format gets rid of pauses?

Anyway, I guess my only option at this stage is to merge the tracks on each mix CD. I figure that a good compromise would be to merge every, say, five tracks into one mp3 file, so that the battery doesn't run low reading album-long tracks.

Thanks for your help everyone :)

There is a way to do it in iTunes folks! Don't give up! On the screen where you rip a cd, you select the tracks that should flow together, then select the option 'join cd tracks' under the Advanced menu. This will rip the tracks as one file. I have used it for the segues in ptb. The only downside is that the tracks stay together as one file, so even though I joined come inside with the big jump for example, I can't burn the big jump separately at some point in the future.

iTunes help Escribi:

If you want to remove the gap of silence that normally occurs between songs, make sure the songs on the CD are sorted by track number in ascending order (click the top of the first column so that it's blue and you see a triangle that points up), then select two or more adjacent songs and choose Advanced > Join CD Tracks.

iTunes imports any joined songs as one track. To change back to importing the songs separately, select the joined songs and choose Advanced > Unjoin CD Tracks.

That's easily overcome by choosing "Cross Fade Between Tracks" in each track's preferences. Then you must indicate cross fade by about 30 frames, available from the drop down menu. I think you will find that it will cross fade the tracks perfectly, just enough ot remove the silence, and not too much to hear the same segment twice.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, that's what I've ended up doing. I listened to a 2ManyDJs mix (which has lots of short tracks mixed together) on my iPOd and it was much better with the tracks joined. I ended up listening to it first to find the best places to leave a pause and ended up merging it into about four tracks :D

The battery doesn't seem to run down any faster than it did before too :D
