chem&m's...nice
I've posted my opinions on iTunes bonus tracks before. I am not a fan of them. For most artists, knowing there is an exclusive through iTunes encourages me to "exclusively" download it through "other means". If I support an artist, I want a physical CD and I will pay for it. Why should I be punished by 1) missing out on extra tracks because I bought the hard goods, 2) missing out on a physical copy because I bought the digital one with extras, or 3) buying it twice.
I understand that digital downloads are the trend and labels don't want to miss out on hot a market, one where they can put out the art with no overhead. However, since downloading is so easy (both legally and illegally), I tend to feel that those of us that buy the physical product are the ones that should be rewarded with the bonus tracks. I also like Eis-T's point about "deluxe editions", and I will always pay the higher price becasue I am actually getting a material product in return.
I will continue to support the Chems with my money and have bought every physical CD and single available to me through retail, imports and the aftermarket. I have even purchased Live '05 since it was only available digitally. However, please don't ask me to buy a second version of the album for one or two tracks, especially if it is not a tangible thing. Because I won't.
Here's the worst part. The artists have little control over these decisions, and even if they did, they might tend to support the method that generates the most profit. I wouldn't blame them. I hope in return they can also respect my opinions as a music lover AND collector.
As far as specific speculation on the new album goes, I think it is a safe bet that "last track" will be the last track. Then again, The Sunshine Underground is smack in the middle of Surrender, so nothing is a given.
