bassstation was a good one, never used a ms404... specral audio neptune was my favorite rackmount monophonic synth, it's loosely like a mini moog with a few extra controls. have you considered the DSI Mopho? that's supposed to be good and real analog and a few sub oscillators to get below the feet.

the nord modular lets you assign every parameter to a midi controller or the synth and combine 25 controls to 1 knob (if you don't have the micro), so I'd definitely say there's a lot of possibilities that don't require you to be stuck in front of your computer.. aside from writing the patches.

don't know much about the Rave-o-lution, does have a terrible name.

terrible name, but good 909,606 and 808 emulations(supposedly). I'll find out really soon.

Even though, with the Nord Modular, you still have to build your patch on the computer, and assign the knobs... I wanna have everything under my fingers.

What the hell ? When are they going to stop bugging us with their Microkorg ? Anyway it's more of an R3 but with a different name and look ? They didn't sell enough R3 so they changed the name to MiroKorg XL ?

EDIT : actually, it's a Microkorg using MMT instead of DWGS ?

yeah but this time, put a decent filter in it. Not the crap that's on the MS2k and Microkorg. I'm curious to hear what the Microkorg XL filter sounds like by the way.

I am excited for it because I think it's symbolically a sign of Korg coming to terms with the fact that the R3 was lifeless and that if they want to make an analog synth they shouldn't try making them look like a microX or hip-hop workstation!! The keys on the microkorg were a huge divider, I own a microkorg (after selling it years ago, buying a ms2000br then going back to the microkorg) because I think the keys are good for certain types of playing, mainly speedy monophonic stuff, a few youtube/matrixsynth videos can definitely show you. also, the microkorg is about the size of the ms2000 rack. As for the filter, ben_j you're dead on. I think though if you run the microkorg through an external analog filter you have a good combo. Analog Oscillators aren't too important compared to the filters. If you look at the Juno-106 you have the perfect example of that DCO/VCF combo (although synth nerds say the juno-60 was better for its "punchy" VCO). I think since the microkorg in appearance and sound is somewhat similar to the EDP Wasp, with out being sold for way too much you have a good combo. When I owned a spectral audio neptune, I used to run the microkorg though that. I suppose a moog filter pedal would be just as good, as would a modular filter (which I still plan to build in the not too distant future). Last, it's always fun to run virtual and software synths through real tubes to give it a more legit feel.

BTW, I still say the Korg DS-10 is an amazing sounding softsynth. It very much tries to appeal to analog fans with out compromising (like r3 sh-201). and it's a tenth the price of the microkorg.

I thought the 60 had a DCO too ? Talking about junos, have you tried the TAL U-NO-60 ? It's supposed to be a Juno 60 emulation. But it sounds really cold, compared to my 106, and there's no patch saving.

And I'm sure combining the MS2k/Microkorg to a moog pedal would be great, but a moog filter would cost more than the synth :D

The DS-10 would be cool with Midi. They should make a PC version of it.

PS : I play "Tom doing a snare roll on the MPC" with my nano key and Ableton live's drum rack with an arpegiator on the snare. Really fun. I just spent an hour doing only that :D hey boy hey girl style !

haven't tried the soft synth juno, although it'd be a tough one to get the bass on. the snare on hbhg is great, especially when they did the american/san francisco show last year and tom started doing the snare segue into arr, felt like being hit in the chest when the bass got low.

software synths are really risky when it comes to quality, most of them share the same problem of being too thin. my favorite soft synths would be ems synthi vst, DaHornet (a freeware emulator of the edp wasp), and probably arturia's minimoog V, not that i ever use it, but it's loud and heavy with a purty interface, you have have a minimoog with a cherry finish, what more do you need?? so many other ones make the microkorg sound as thick as a moog. but sometimes thin is good, otherwise the track would sound cluttered down stairs.

I think only the Korg MS2000 has a pedal, the microkorg doesn't. that is another reason i am in love with the nord modular, is that it has an expression pedal spot, which is great for the guitar players out there who want a filter or ring modulator that can be controlled by pedal. the stuff you can do with an electric guitar and the nord modular definitely is why I'll bury myself with it...

I'm getting more and more attracted to the Mopho... But I need to try it first, I think the lack of pots will stop my creativity again.

And I think after christmas I'm finally going to buy a Big Muff, but which one should I get ? I've read the little big muff is the best, but it was a guitar player speaking.

I have the regular Big Muff and it's good, especially for mono synths, but it gets a little noisy when you play the guitar or chords on the synth I think. Metal Zone is a good one though for both synths and guitar. it's got more controls on it for boosting/lowering the hi and lo levels

I'm beginning to understand just how powerful the MS-20 is, and why so many bands use it live. I need a real one !

I got a Boss Metal Zone and a Little Big Muff today, and my long awaited christmas present: the PCR500 :D Both pedals are great, the boss sounds great on synths and the big muff make groovy beats sound Mr Oizo-esque (he used a lot of distortion on his beats during his Analog Worms Attack era)

Hey, I got one of those. I love distorting vocals/drums for an industrial type of feel. You should also check out out the Boss DD-3. It's a great toy for delay.

Micron: Don’t be a pretentious a-ho --

Mopho: A whole lot of producers want my sound.

MicroKorg: A whole lot of producers HAVE my sound.

Micron: Hey, I’m selling well too.

Mopho: Didn’t your big brother bomb. Too bad nobody respects specs.

Mopho: I’m easy to tweak.

MicroKorg: Me too; Matrix Editor once you pick it up…

Mopho: Once you pick it up.

Micron: Wait, wait..wait…I’ve got drums!

MicroKorg: He’s got drums.

Mopho: I’ve got some drum sounds too.
