What do you all think of the Lips? I got really into them after I heard The Soft Bulletin and ended up getting everything by them (Zaireeka included, even though I still haven't been able to set up the 4 stereos to listen to it...). I've also seen them put on two really great shows, one at Bonnaroo 2 years ago when they covered some Pink Floyd stuff off of DSOTM, and then with Wilco at New Years (and that was AWESOME!).

Anyway, they just put out a new compilation that has a really eclectic mix of stuff on it. It's called "Late Night Tales"and it's got their cover of Seven Nation Army on it, along with tracks recorded by Bjork, Radiohead, Nick Drake, Miles Davis, the Psychadelic Furs and lots of others. It also includes "Playground for a Wedgeless Firm" from Exit Planet Dust, which I'm sure you've all heard, but there's lots of other great tracks on there as well. Have any of you checked this out? I really dig it.

Do you have "Finally, The Punk Rockers Are Taking Acid "?

The Flaming Lips are awesome, and just seem to get better with time.

Yoshimi battles the Pink Robots is an awesome album, thought thats the only Lips album I've heard.

I've been working my way backwards through their discography, and Soft Bulletin was even better than Yoshimi... I lurved Yoshimi, and thought that going backwards into their discography would disappoint me, but it didn't... not only is it musically genius, the lyrics are fucking poetry.

One particular track that I like from Soft Bulletin, that I listen to whenever I feel down, is called 'The Gash':

Is that gash in your leg

Really why you have stopped?

‘Cause I’ve noticed all the others

Though they’re gashed, they’re still going

‘Cause I feel like the real reason

That you’re quitting, that you’re admitting

That you’ve lost all the will to battle on

Will the fight for our sanity

Be the fight of our lives?

Now that we’ve lost all the reasons

That we thought that we had

Still the battle that we’re in

Rages on till the end

With explosions, wounds are open

Sights and smells, eyes and noses

But the thought that went unspoken

Was understanding that you’re broken

Still the last volunteer battles on

Battles on

Battles on

8O chem'd, am I reading you correctly? You've had a change of heart about Wayne Coyne? Does that mean your I Hate Wayne Coyne Club days are behind you? But what about all that redecorating of the clubhouse you did!! ;)

I am so surprised, and pleased at the same time. Glad you liked Yoshimi, it's a great record, there's so much textural depth, really trippy sounds and I enjoy the lyrics. It's a solid album (although track 4 is one of those songs where you have to be in the mood for weird noises and screaming.)

Anyway, Soft Bulletin is a fantastic record as well. It's 'stash's favorite of the Lips albums, but for me it's right up alongside Yoshimi. It brought me through some heavy duty times last year.

Actually now that I think about it, so has Yoshimi...
be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle

Tommy Guerrero's LateNightTales mix is my personal favorite. A whole CD with classic 70's soul and funk music.

If you rip the tracks onto you computer, you can then use audio software, such a Sony Sound Forge to join the tracks into one, layering them onto each other. It won't be quite what the artist intended, but it will be the next best thing.

Speaking of the Flaming Lips, I got into them when everyone praised Yoshimi. I also got the 5.1 DVD-Audio of Yoshimi, and I must say it just sounds fantastic, with the sound panning around the room. It just shows what is possible with the new sound format. They of course also provide a crispy Advanced Resolution Stereo track for the purists. Well worth checking out.

Toomuch, I HAVEN'T heard that song. Is it a good track? I too worked my way back through their catalog. The new stuff is my favorite, just for the production value, but the other stuff is really awesome too.

I'll also have to check out Tommy Guerrero's LateNightTales cd, cuz I love the funk.

Oh yeah, it's a good one. All of the Soft Bulletin is good, reallly good... just the thing when beats and breaks aren't called for.
