Seems that we don't live in such a bad place after all Mr Chirac, we may eat bad food and be at the centre of BSE but still London was won the battle proving a better hoast than Paris!

Ah the London Olympics. Is that the event which only London taxpayers money goes into, whilst everyone else pays for it through cuts to public services?

I think it's wonderful news for the Londoners, it will bring in a lot of revenue no doubt - though mc marsh did bring up valid points on the bid setbacks.

True, but the overall benefits are bar better than the negativeness. It going to be brilliant being on the world stage for sport. Much trade will be genorated though it from increased transport used to mechandise ect. I think the best think though is that we will be the the forefront of world sport and hopefully this will genroate more interest in sport therefore lifting the health of the nation.

Im sorry ben_j im sure paris would of held an excellent games like france has done with other sporting event. Its a shame that Chirac and negative views of us seeing as we live so close to each other, hopefully his stupidness wont cause conflict between GB and French people.

yes it is a great day for britain!!

i have never really enjoyed olympic sports. but the idea of the games coming to london i found rather inspiring. its going to be fantastic having the ultimate world class sporting event on my door step.

its going to be great for london. the city seems to really be moving forward and this is just another thing making london really great. today i feel really proud of my capital, its a good feeling

i must admit i have been anoyed by jacques chirac comments about the british this week. he has issues with blair, thats one thing. but a leader should show more respect to a nation.

Jacques Chirac : "You can't trust people who cook as badly as that. After Finland, it's the country with the worst food."

Warming to his theme, the French leader added, to laughter from Putin and Schroeder: "The only thing they [the English] have ever done for European agriculture is mad cow."

I'm a fuckin doughnut

Maybe Chirac was trying to joke, but what he said is just insulting - I'd have hoped he would know better than making petty jokes about food of all things, especially since the French were the brunt of food jokes in the US. Freedom Fries, anyone? Come on Chirac...

Anyway - when the Olympics were held in Los Angeles in 1984, it generated not only a lot of revenue but a lot of excitement in the city and surrounding areas that held sporting events as well. The Olympic torch was carried through downtown Laguna Beach and it was really cool to see everyone out and cheering on the torch bearer, it was a big cause for celebration and being a little kid, it was exciting to be a part of that! Also, the Olympics gave the city of Los Angeles reason for a good old fashioned scrub down to make it beautiful - yes it meant tax dollars were used, but in my opinion it was worth it. LA can be filthy.

The funny thing was all these world leaders that came to Los Angeles for the Olympics. They were expecting hoards of traffic jams since LA is known for having hideous traffic issues. But the roads were clear and all these foreigners were wondering what happened to the famous smog. It was like a miracle!

I love a good bottle of French wine, as for French food it's not very often I can get around to it. It's crazy expensive to get real good authentic French food around here. There are some crepe places nearby which are good, but it's not what you'd call authentic. Still good though! :)

Of course I love London, but I don't have Paris to compare it to because I've never been. Perhaps one day I will so I can actually have a real opinion on it and some experience to back it up. It seems a bit moot to play this tit-for-tat with these 2 cities as they both have so much to offer as far as history, culture and art goes - especially where I am coming from, being from the States n'all, where our history is short and our culture can be... well, you know. ;) Both cities would make great hosts for any event such as the Olympics, I'm sure it was a tough win situation for London to beat out Paris.

Perhaps Paris will bid to host the Olympic games at a later date. There's always a next time!

Paris already tried for the 2008 games X-D Maybe one day, we will have them, in 2038 X-D. Anyway, as a french actor said, London is only 1h 1/2 from Paris with the Eurostar :)

Whirly : I can give you the recipe to cook Crepes ;)

Well... congatulations to london but it's a shame for the CIO. I'm really angry because we had made a huge work. Of Sir Coe has worked really hard to increase London. But you really can't imagine how in France we wanted this games.

Many people who usually are not agry (for exemple Delanoe and Chirac. One is on the left and the other on the right) worked together. 700 000 people came to the Champs-Elyses 1 month ago to show that they were for the olympics games. It's easy to say congratulations to london. But Paris had made and incredible work ! So many people on one project...

Sorry but the CIO dont' think only with sport. It's a business. Shame on it, really. But London is not so far, i'll come to this games and rock the underground with block rockin' beats lol. Congratulations. But, believe me, you can't imagine how we are disappointed and quite angry. Peace

Exactly...I mean , dont you think Owa it was the same in the UK ? The people would be dissapointed there to...i'm sure they put as much effort in winning the bid as Paris did. I understand the dissapointment , and i agree that it's more about business than about sport. But that would also be the case if Paris would win.

So, being from the latest city (Chicago) to be snubbed to host the 2016 Olympics. It got me thinking about the olympics in general. I totally forgot that London is hosting in 2012. Now, I'm not sure if this was ever brought up. But considering, in the opening ceremonies they like to display the host countries culture in show, music, dance, etc. (ala The Malaka Laka Balance Board of Trust) Begs the question, why not have The Chemical Brothers represent London in the opening ceremonies?

Amuse me people. I'm stuck at home on a Saturday Night watching Weekend at Bernies 2

Sorry, I don't see it. I love Tom and Ed all in but I just don't see them doing something for the olympics. Somehow Rave sirens, Acidy goodness, melodic euphoria, combined with Love is all really strikes me as an international bringing together of the world.

Its more about showcasing the popularity of a nations greatness that stands out. It'll more likely be monarchy, history, Football, Britan moving towards the future, and throw in whatever squeaky clean pop idol is making a run up the charts for a music piece.

As for Olympics, Being in Canada it's all latest controversy over major expenditure or social problem covered up for the upcoming winter olympics in February on local media. I am still kinda upset that its CTV doing all the broadcasting for this olympics. They make everything so corporate and.....Well artificial. I really am in love with the CBC.....Okay enough with the media loving/bashing

The Chemical Brothers couldn't represent London. They're from Manchester.

Personally, living exactly (or almost) between Paris and London, it doesn't change many things for me. A few teams (at least a fencing one) will train in the regional center of sportive education, near my ancient collège.
