For the past day and a half I've been feeling disturbed and sad and angry, and I have to get it off my chest.
I get an urgent call at work yesterday from my brother's wife. We're close. We see each other often and we speak on the phone every couple of days. She knows my work schedule so when we talk it's not during my work hours. When my phone rings at the odd work hour and her name comes up on the screen, that kind of makes me nervous. The only time that happens.. well, the last time that happened my dad needed open heart surgery. So I pick up the phone around 1:30 and my sister in law sounds like she's a bit out of breath but trying to maintain. She said some guy with a shot gun had just walked into a salon 2 blocks away from where my brother and his fam live, and started open firing, killing a bunch of people - some at point blank range. Just open firing on a bunch of ladies getting their hair did on a beautiful sunny afternoon in Seal Beach, California. And some poor guy sitting in his car, who happened to be in the gunman's way when he exited the bloody scene.
It was a custody battle gone awry between a crazy ex-husband and his ex-wife, and 8 people are dead because some whacked out gun loving fool had a shitty day in court. What the fuck. These victims had fuck all to do with anything other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. This kind of shit doesn't happen there, ever. This kind of shit shouldn't happen anywhere, period. I spend a lot of my weekends in that small sleepy beach town community, hanging with my brother's fam. And I often think about moving there when I find a job in the field I want to work in. It's a great community that's laid back, and everyone knows everyone and it's a good place to raise a family. I love it there. And now it's home to the worst mass slaying in my county.
But hopefully the universe will right itself. Tomorrow is another day.
*sigh*

Loved it! Too humid but you get used to it. Had never been out of the state so it was a great experience overall. Would love to do another trip like this. New York next time perhaps...
