it's an elephant seal.
I believe the roaring is fake. But it made me laugh.

When I was a kid, my family and I used to volunteer at this place called Friends of the Sea Lion here in Laguna Beach. They'd take in injured seals (harbor seals, sea lions, etc) and nurse them back to health then release them back into the wild. Every once in a while we'd get an elephant seal in. Those creatures are gnarly, and easily agitated. Not only are they massive in size, they're quick to lunge with teeth baring. Those people in the clip are nuts for approaching a wild animal so carelessly. I believe the roar in that clip is real. I've heard those animals roar and it's unearthly and terrifying.

"I've heard those animals roar and it's unearthly and terrifying"
you can say that again.

This is really amazing - it's a detail of Da Vinci's The Last Supper and you can zoom in, some 16 billion pixels to get lost in. I'm sort of an art geek so I find this stuff fascinating. I hope to one day see this in person...

don't know if this has been posted before but it is a truly incredible site. if you're amazed that you've never heard of this thing before it's because they apparently don't advertise at all.
www.redbullmusicacademy.com
basically they pick some damn lucky creative type applicants (bloody ungrateful going by their apathy) every year, pay for their flights and hotel accomodation and have workshop style sessions running throughout the day, given by some absolute musical legends. seems to be material in different forms all over the site but a list of the interviews they do with artists (most with video) is here:

enjoy. i've spent the whole day on it. i particularly recommend derrick mays interview. and a video of a-trak (playing fabric next friday) casually 'jamming' while producing a dmc worthy performance..
