Caddy why the hell have you 2 adittional tracks on the new album ?? here in Europe we don't have ! and yes...i agree with you that "A modern midnight conversation" "Das spiegel" and the others tracks you've mentioned are great and sounds like the great unique chemical beat. The other tracks aren't quite well as i was expected!

I know this is like 5 months too late, but don't they usually release a DJ mix like Anti-Nazi, Confront Your Demons, or In Glint right before an album. WTF? Guess Surrender was the one time they didn't before, both this and that album are my favorite so maybe it's a sign... ok don't release a dj mix!

When the salmon dance will be released with EBW 8 on it I'm going to upgrade my WATN cd to a WATN extended edition.

When I listen to DIA extended and EBW 8 a couple of times after hearing WATN I don't understand why those 2 were edited. It probably has to do with the flow of the album which Tom and Ed like better with the edited versions but I miss the intro on EBW 8 and the first break in DIA extended. And even with the outro of DIA extended it still could be mixed into Das Spiegel.

So I will do something against Tom and Eds idea of the album. Maybe Snooprah could be a nice extended replacement of Harpoons.

What are other peoples thoughts about the extended versions?

I think the versions of Do It Again and Saturate on the album are good as, fine just how they are.

To have had the extended versions (I think) would have disrupted the flow of the album like you pointed out. Also, the album has to be consistant. I get a very conceptual feel with We Are The Night. It wouldn't feel right to have extended versions of songs because I think it would take away from the other tracks.

Besides, the extended version of Do It Again plus Electric Battle weapon are great extra goodies to add to the Chems collection. I'm really looking forward to finally getting a good copy of Electronic Battle Weapon 8!

YEAH!! I finally got that signed WATN CD. Took me a while... Ed signed his name "ED!" He must've been very enthusiastic signing for hours on end

It was Newbury Comics that had the signed copies of We Are The Night, I believe.

Right on, Biif - I'm glad you finally got your signed copy , haha. I wonder why it took so long for you to get it?

Anyway - signed copies = Very cool for the collector and nice keepsake for '07 summer soundtrack.

For anyone who wishes them here is what i believe to be the lyrics to:

The Pills Won’t Help You Now

I thought we were going

To go up the field and wait

To join all the other living souls

But you never came

Robbed of your fortune

They gave disappointments and lies

You’re probably poisoning your body

I hope you’re alright

In the moment I feel

You dig in your heels

The pills won’t help you now

Why don’t you come?

I thought we were going

To go up the field and wait

To join all the other living souls

But you never came

Robbed of your fortune

They gave disappointment in life

You’re probably poisoning your body

I hope you’re alright

In the moment I feel

You dig in your heels

The pills won’t help you now

Why don’t you come?

Robbed of your fortune

They gave disappointments and lies

I just think that they make more sense, as whoever didnt go to the field is obviously out their head and being paranoid etc etc and saying "no fucking way am I going" and "No fucking way i'm calling you either as I have been dissapointed before and I have been lied to" but what the tune is aying is that no matter where you are and if you dig in your heels, pills wont help you as you are too far gone.

You are F.U.B.A.R ;-)

What say you???

Its about fucking time I did this...

We Are the Night

Not sure about the beat but like the build-up at the start, the casio-keyboard high notes and the vocals. Maybe a bit tuneless at times but think the vocal parts make it a good track. 7.5/10

All Rights Reversed

Really not feeling this track at all, don't like the trancey hits in it, just think it sounds like something they've done before (a dark version of The Boxer maybe?). Don't like the boring lyrics ("it never stops and no-one's stopping") and the Klaxons' weedy voices. Maybe something will change, who knows. 3/10

Saturate

I think EBW 8's miles better but I think the edit just about does it justice...picks up nearly all the best bits...tidy beats and cool acid lines, love the bit towards the end with the hard kickdrum, acid hits and creepy eeeiiiewww in the background (need a better way to describe it!).Yeah. 8/10

Do it Again

Wasn't sure at first but when I got an idea of what Ali Love was singing about I seemed to have a lot more time for the song. Intro great but most of all those crazy sound effects that come in after about 3 minutes and the build up is fucking awesome. 8.5/10

Das Spiegel

Fucking love this track- love the transition from a noisy mess into a blissful number, genius! Its like Star Guitar and TSU's mischevious cousin. Cool mouth organ, guitar riff and sound effects. Just puts a smile on my face. One of my faves on the album. 10/10

The Salmon Dance

Another track that just makes me smile. So random its untrue, love the Wildlife presenter samples with Fatlip's lyrics. Wonder what he thought of the whole thing when Tom and Ed suggested the idea to him? 8/10

Burst Generator

Still need to give this a few more listens but sounds cool on big speakers. Very straightforward bassline, but works wellish with the mangled guitars and acid riff. Bit predictable at times but would be interested to hear this live. Buildup towards the end awesome on big speakers - whooooshh! 7/10

A Modern Midnight Conversation

Fucking love this, love the basslines, 80s riffs (all the stuff Bosco hates about it I think lol) and psychedelic vocal samples. Favourite bit is the stuttering beats in the middle. How do Tom and Ed carry off the loud part at the end with the whooshes and bell crashes withoout it sounding crap (without it being out of proportion with the rest of the song maybe)? 9/10

Battle Scars

Interesting song, another catchy number. Don't fully understand the lyrics but nice all the same. Cool noises after the buildup towards the end. 7.5/10

Harpoons

Very blissfull, sounds like a cross between Orbital's Halcyon and something from Ecco the Dolphin. Perfect soundtrack to underwater nature programme? 7/10

The Pills Won't Help you Now

Beautiful, perfectly structured song. Needs more listens but sounds amazing on big speakers in the dark. The last 3 minutes incredible 9/10.

Sorry for my repetitiveness but I've been up since 5am and can't think of better words...maybe they will come later...

marsh, I was waiting for you to come by and review this album! I didn't find what you wrote repetetive at all. The parts you liked were spot on and on par with how I feel about the tunes.

Trust me, any reservations you have about We Are The Night, All Rights Reversed and Burst Generator will fly out the window when you see the Chems banging it out live.

Thanks for this - it's always good to get a word in from a veteran forumer and Chems fan!

Thanks - I'm not feeling on top today when it comes to 'dance music language' which others on here use a lot.

Now to listen to the interviews, look at all the opendisc stuff and of course see them live - its been a while now but all will change in December when the bruddas grace the north of England :D. Got some catching up to do!

my question is,

Is it ever to late to review an album?

Hell my opinion about alot of the older albums change over time as I grow up with them. it even comes down to what I compare and contrast two albums or songs. last night I listened to It began in afrika and then EBW9. I'm strating to consider EBW9 the evil succesor to it began in afrika with that mad cowbell rythym.

It is never too late to review an album! I heard this when it first came out, but I want to do a review of it. I had fun writing a song-by-song review of the gig I went to, so what the hell!

Let me first state that I was foaming at the mouth waiting for this album to be released. "Push the Button" was a special album for me. It was really the first whole album that I looked forward to and listened through on many occasions. Being part of the Napster generation, I was very familiar with the Bros before PTB of course, but only on a song-by-song basis. PTB was my airport soundtrack. I listened to it on long flights to see my girlfriend and when I got stuck in Cleveland airport all night. Special memories there.

So, I was hoping that We Are The Night would provide another special punctuation on my life, and indeed, in many ways, it has. Hearing these tunes live at McCarren Park was a life-changing experience. Ok, enough jabber, onto the review!

1. No Path to Follow - 7.0 - Oh my god, what a weak opener!!!... or is it? The first part of We Are The Night (the song) seems more like the "intro" of the album, so what the hell is this, exactly? Here is my theory (and I think you'll agree) - I think Tom and Ed KNEW that they'd play this before gigs in their upcoming tour. Because after you hear this at a gig, it sends chills up your spine every time you hear it on the album. Unfortunately, it doesn't make much sense unless you attend a gig....

I think this has been the longest commentary on this track EVER. Moving on...

2. We Are The Night - 9.5 - What power, and what simplicity, too. The whole song is basically centered around one bassline. The seagull sounds seem kinda out of place (do you associate seagulls with night?), but other than that, everything about this song is great. Hell, I take it back, even the seagulls are great. This is fun to play in the car.

3. All Rights Reversed - 8.5 - This is a great track, although it's not as fantastically great as I think it could've been if more work had been put into the drums. Everything else about the song is stellar (vocals, fx, melody), but those wimpy little fuzz drums... tisk. Oh well, it's still awesome.

4. Saturate - 10.0 - It's perfect.

5. Do It Again - 9.0 - Oh the BASS! I love that bass, although I think the album version should have reflected the kind of build-up heard in the current live version of the song. I like to anticipate the bass, like you can in We Are the Night earlier in the album. Ali Love gets on my nerves, but I can't stop singing along with him. The precussion twitches so perfectly.

6. Das Spiegel - 9.5 - Great great track. The feel-good track of the year? I'd venture to say yes.... or maybe I should reserve that title for track 7. Loved the organic feel of this track. It genuinely sounds like it was hand-crafted and I like that.

7. The Salmon Dance - 8.5 - Yeah, this is funny. It's also well-crafted and badass at the same time. I can't help myself from rapping along and... unfortunately, dancing along with this one. Can't get that image of plastic divers Ed and Tom away from this either... which is a good thing.

8. Burst Generator - 9.5 - It's like all of the previous songs joined powers to create the "Captain Planet" of this album. This song is HUGE! It's psychedelic, it's dancey, it has a massive build-up, perfect bass, perfect melody. It has it all, really. And it has the pure brute power to justify Salmon Dance being on the album. You hear Salmon Dance and think to yourself "Haha, that was silly" and then *massive buildup* BOOM! "Whoa!"

9. A Modern Midnight Conversation - 9.0 - Listen to your heart... that is so cheesey. Those 80's synths, sappy lyrics... this really is a cheesey song. Why do I like it so much? To be honest, I didn't like it on first listen, but for some reason, it grew on me. And hearing it live sealed the deal. This is a great tune. Very vibrant, very sing-able, very unique.

10. Battle Scars - 6.5 - Meeeehhh... I really liked this upon first listen, but it's actually been growing on me less and less on each listen. It just doesn't seem to fit. Mason's Cash-like voice over clinky xylophone tunes with lyrics about how life sucks? Nah, not for me. I usually skip this song every time. What happened to the great "storm before the calm" songs like Hey Boy Hey Girl? This does not justify Harpoons.

11. Harpoons - 7.5 - Yeah, it's pretty, but after Battle Scars, I'm thinking "What do I need this break for?" This should've come after something like Burst Generator or Saturate for sure.

12. The Pills Won't Help You Now - 9.5 - What a beauty this song is. It seemed so very wrong when I first heard it. I went "This is the Chemical Brothers???" But it is so very right in many ways. A very pretty and very worthy send-off for the album. "Zen album" indeed.

Well, there you go. Best album since Surrender if you ask me.

Yeah, I cant stop listening to this album ever since I got back from my Chemical Cali trip. And you can trash my crappy review. Tom and Ed have made me eaten my words big time.

^ haha, oh yeah! I dig how seeing and hearing something live puts a whole new spin on things. I was the same - I told you on Saturday - about Come With Us and when I heard the songs played out live and that changed everything even though I'd already been letting the album grow. Going to a show was the final push. I'm not ashamed... Is it wrong to admit I kinda like it when Tom and Ed's music proves me wrong and makes me eat my words?
