I was just wondering about all of this. I've been a fan of another band, Skinny Puppy, and they've even had these types of dancers in their video.
Example, their Pro-Test video

Does anyone know how widespread this dance craze actually is? Ogre (singer from Skinny Puppy) said it was something that just recently started.

Very interesting, I'll have to check these videos... my husband followed Skinny Puppy for a while, I dabbled in it by default so I don't know much in regards to the band - been a while so I'm out of the loop on all things Skinny Puppy. But I thought Ogre dropped out of Skinny Puppy a while ago, or is he back??
Anyway, here's a little bit of history about krumping:

Of course, there's quite a bit of other sites regarding dance and hip hop culture where this is explained. But that's the basic run down, I don't think it's brand spankin new but like so many other things in sub and alternative cultures it was probably underground for a while, and just recently surfaced.

Well, Skinny Puppy broke up around 1996. Ogre went on to do his Ohgr sideproject while Cevin did the Download, Hilt, Tear Garden, and plateau sideprojects. They reformed around 2000 to do a reunion concert and released a CD in 2004 called The Greater Wrong of the Right. This latest CD kind of has elements from Ohgr and Download in it. It's pretty good. However, some of the fans who didn't follow those sideprojects were kind of put off by the direction they chose to take Skinny Puppy in. It seems to me almost like they're intentionally trying to get on the bad side of those people. A bunch of people whined about this Pro-Test song and said it had too many hip-hop elements to it so apparently they decided to go all the way and put as much hip-hop culture as possible into the video.
