Homelands DJ set, 24 may 03

You can always tell the summer is coming when a. big brother comes back on TV and b. the homelands festival. Both happened this weekend but only one I cared about.
This years homelands event was a 17 hour marathon, with 8 music stages. The event felt a little smaller than previous years. More a return to basic, rather than getting every dance music performer under the sun in one festival.
The Chems were on stage at 9 pm and played a two hour set. This was a little disappointing , I would have preferred there set to be a bit later at night, say anywhere between midnight and 4 am. The set they played swayed more to the techno edge rather than the break/house set I would have preferred. Maybe this was because they were sandwiched between the bugged out! residents James Holroyd and Justin Robertson.
I made a note of the set list, sorry for the vagueness in places
Unknown ? throbbing techno track, they let the crowd know they had arrived!!
Unknown ? bit of a hip-hop track, sounded like something that would fit on ?live at the social?
Chemical Brothers bootleg ? the Dj Milo/Impulsion mash up that starts the ?in glint? or ?dusted decks? mix
Chemical Brothers ? H I A
Unknown ? techno track sounded similar to emmanuel top ?Lobotomie? from their essential mix
Chemical Brothers ? It Began In Afrika, original version they made for their dj sets (not to be confused with the 12?/ebw 5 mix)
Agoria - La 11eme Marche ????
Josh Wink ? Freak
Unknown ? Mad dirty house tune, really got those hands in the air!
Chemical Brothers ? Electronic Battle Weapon 6
DJ Zinc ? 138 Trek
Chemical Brothers ? Under The Influence (electronic battle weapon version)
Unknown ? house tune
DBX ? Losing Control
Dubtribe Sound System ? Mother Earth
Unkown ? another techno track, with fatboy slim style acid line
Sabres of Paradise ? Smokebelch II, this version they always play. Sounds like the David Holmes remix but I think this might be re-edited by the chems.
Unknown ? more techno
Chemical Brothers ? Star Guitar
Chemical Brothers bootleg ? Freestyle/Metro LA mash up that appears on ?anti nazi mix? and BGWIO
Unkown ? hard techno
I didn?t really hear anything that sounded like it may be something new by the chemical brothers which was a shame. On the whole I left thinking I hadn?t heard the best set from them. But then again it not every week you get to see them play.

I agree it would have been great had their set started later. But a two hour set? Wow, you lucky dog! When I saw them do a dj set a couple years ago, they closed the festival with an hour and 15 minute which was interrupted by the houselights going on. By the time they got on after Fatboy, a lot of people were spent after enduring 100+ degree desert heat all day so the seeming lack of enthusiasm on the part of the audience was probably due to just being plain wiped out. So I suppose 9pm is a decent festival time to play - at least the audience isn't completely exhausted by that point. Anyway. Their set was tight and tons of fun, the tent rocked. And we got to preview Afrika and Galaxy Bounce (I knew which song was Afrika, and even though I didn't know Galaxy Bounce from a hole in the ground I knew it was theirs because they were excitedly trying to get the audience to w00t and put their hands in the air).
So what were the audience like?

as i said in my review i didn't hear anything that sounded like new chemical brothers matterial, seems im wrong. this is stole from radio one's homelands review
The Chemicals showcased a track they've done with Wayne from the Flaming Lips. Tom & Ed told us working with him was fantastic:
"It's incredible. He's just an infectious man. He's brilliant. We met him and we just got on really well."

I almost wet my pants when I read the link about the Flaming Lips/Chems collab track!! You really are a lucky guy. I was real excited to hear about them working together and even more excited now that they're already playing it in their sets. Now if they would just come to California... I want to hear right this very minute, I want to heat it at ear piercing decibles! lol! I'm glad it will be on the comp so we don't have to wait till summer '04 when their next record is due out.

my greatest moment in my clubbing life was at creamfields 2001 when she got me press passes. this ment i could stand the other side of the rail. a really sureal moment, i was sandwiched between the speaker stack and the railings, there was 10,000 people behind me!! i was danicing with the likes of justin robertson, lottie and seb fontaine. i was so into the being on what should really been for me 'the wrong side' i was handing out water to the people in the crowd!! at the end of the chemical brothers set, i and my mate dave were the first people to meet tom and ed as they came off stage. trully magic
thank you miss B for giving me some magic nights

like to see you do better, if you have nothing constructive to say, dont say it!!first of all I agree no offense to antype, but pointless/negative posts seem to have diluted the quality of this board. Anyway thanks for the good review, it's been driving me mad to figure out what this years DJ set list is like, I'm actually amazed with some of the stuff they put in that seems much more different than there past DJ sets

i was at the front of the rails!!! i'm really lucky to know a girl who work for a major promotion company in the dance music world. she has sorted me out with Vip passes for all the major UK festivals over the last 4 year.

Wow you're just getting luckier by the minute! What a rush to have those connections and be at the front of 10,000 people - like being at the head of a music revolution. Imagine what it must feel like to be on that stage!
I was at the rails during a 2001 dj set. I eventually moved back a notch to let a guy with his kid in front of me. I couldn't help but keep looking in back of me to see the swarm of people dancing with their arms in the air. The setting was a bit more intimate than the 10,000 you mentioned but it was still a rush. It made me feel like a teenager all over again.

'Lucky dog' is never meant to offend. Just an expression. :)
Agreed on getting the one stab at life and making the most out of it. Turning 30 is, well... let's just say it's a milestone and was for the most part a positive retrospective year for me!
