btw my prob with #2 was that it's ugly to end a sentence/clause with a preposition -- nothing wrong with "they" or "what" (though "that which" is much sexier than "what" -- the reason I removed the "what" is that you can't retain the "what" and place the preposition earlier)

and as for #3 -- these rules have been steadfastly formalised for years

and in "whom you ask" the whom could be a potential antecedent but is not

With number two though, the preposition has a prestated object (what) and therefore it isn't necessary to end the clause with one. It might be sexier to change everything around and use "that which," but it's equally grammatically correct to use "what". As for number three... fuck it, I blame American public school teachers. :P
