Compare you must until you combust, but you can't compare something different. Would you compare a car with a bagel? Would you compare a train with your mother's stockings? No. Same here - different albums from different times; last time Chems were younger, now they're more mature and different from last time... 1997 music is different from 2007 music.

If I had to name a least favorite track, which I'd be hard pressed to do, it would be Modern Midnight Conversation... too much cowbell.

and who is the chick singing on there?

mostly noobs who got into all the albums over a period of 6 months and haven't lived the albums as different parts and times of their lives, compare, compare they must!

Your comment is yawn material.

Because the two albums exist and were made at different times, I have to sit there and treat them as if one doesn't exist while I think of the other?

That is not justified.

Comparing, what I believe, the most popular and greatest Chemical Brothers CD (DYOH) of the past with what could possibly be the new "best" album of their's is quite a reasonable thing to do.

Hell, did you read the whole essay back with the old site layout about how each album is just an extension of every other album? If they are going for that vibe, then you can compare "similar" things.

Yeah I know what you mean stash (you're still stash fo life!), but I think the light guitar playing, probably from the sample, sounds really good. The bass sounds like something from a Talking Heads song, who I'm a big fan of and the chems have mentioned. I really like the break down of the sounds and the playing it really gritty and rough with the synths, which is just reverb-crazy at the end. Vocal sample seems different from other samples before, but they tend to not be repetitious, which is what makes them who they are

Pt taken Android - I apologise for my comment - I'm not much of an arguement guy unless it's something really blasphemous. ;)

I was merely referring to lists cropping up on this particular thread. It's ok, if folks want to do that.

I think comparing this album to previous Chems works isn't necessarily a bad thing as androidgeff said - each album is pretty much an extension of each other. How I see them is an evolution from one to the next, you can hear the Chems grow with each album and take that chemical footprint from one album to the next, always growing always changing but keeping things familiar. They are so good at what they do and how they do it. And comparing one Chems album to the next - that's better than comparing them to other bands out there. Or trying to peg them into some ridiculous genre like minimal schminimal or emo. I'm sorry but what a frikken load of crap!

Anyway we all have our favorites which will be a cut above the rest. For me each album is special, each signifying a different time in my life where I was feeling and going through certain things. There will always be "the one" Chems album that found me when I most needed it and brought me into the fold which will always be special, but those days are over and it's high time for me to move on and embrace the now.

For personal reasons, We Are The Night comes at a time when I really need it, it hits me on every emotional level I have *right now* and I feel very connected to what's going on in the songs, and it makes me love music all over again through the older ears I have now... this is a bonding album for me and my husband, we are on the same wave length with this album, and my love for We Are The Night goes much deeper than what I hear on the surface.

Fuck it.I need to say what i feel about this album. I was not gonna say anything about it anymore but i HAVE to express my feelings.

Note : i have only listened to it about 4 times and than i deleted it and this was about 2 weeks ago- so things have to settle in.

But i think this might be their best album yet.

When i listened to this album i was critical. I expect great things of Tom and Ed , but i was also nervous , because i dont like , maybe 5% of their stuff , and offcourse you cannot like everything from an artist.

How wrong was i.

Jeez. The first time i listened to this album....i cannot explain it. It couldnt have come at a better time. I was / am in a bit of a funk , and there is some music out there that makes me feel better , but there's only few music that can do what the Chems do. So , i was a bit nervous , and very excited too. I was all warm and red thinking "Omg i'm gonna hear it!"

And than i heard it :|

MY goodness. So epic. So euphoric. So dark and raw , so sexy , so beautiful and emotional. It reminds me of SO many things. It reminds me of amazing things that happened in my life that are in no way conected to the song - it reminds me of shitty periods too. Its weird when you hear a song and it brings you back to a memory you havent thought of for ages and suddenly something inbetween the layers of music makes you remember a wonderfull thing. Like climbing over the tidepooks in Oz. Little things.

The intro sounds like making yourself ready for a big night out. Whenever i go partying , i am always a bit nervous. I do my make up and i listen to some good tuneage - the tunes i play depend on the party i go to , dance for rave ups and madonna for a girls night out - and you feel that tingling feeling of "This could turn out to be one of those unforgettable nights" The intro is like , nervous making but excited. Like Tomorrow Never Knows at the PTB tour. Like dropping E and waiting for the rush to start.

And than there is the rusg and its called WE ARE THE NIGHT. My god what a tune. When i heard this...i cannot explain what i felt! Here i was sitting behind my PC with my shitty earplugs that my cats LOVE to play with , being totally lost in the music , the first feeling i got when i heard this song was "THE DOORS!" ... DOes anybody else hear that in the song ?! Jeez u guys - They are not only the night , they are the fucking universe. With this album they didnt only made music that applies to the night - thet made music that is conected to night and day , sunshine and rain , u know what i mean ?! We are the life would have been an appropriated title but it doesnt sound so funky ;)

All Rights Reversed - THE BEAT! Listen to the beat! Fuck me its so phat! And the lyrics , so clever. Jeez that beat! This track is like a modern version of the older Chems Tracks. Its SO good , i think its one of the best tune on the album.

Saturate brought back so many memories - NYE ANYBODY ?! And i always thought this was an amazing track.

- I'm not gonna talk about all the tracks although i love them all - Some more than others. I dont remember everything so well. I had a hectic week you can't blame me!!!

-The Salmon Dance. MUAHAHA! How silly! Its like Whirls said - this is the moment in the night where everything goes a bit wrong. When u start talking about Random Shit - or Star Wars. U know " Yeah and then Dart Vader stands up and goes like "NOOOOO!"" Ahahahahaha  Yeah , i like it , because its funny. Not their best track imo - but its so funny. The lyrics are wicked!

And than there was...

BURST GENERATOR.

Fucking hell! FUCKING HELL! Ok i really ahve to stop saying the word fuck but FUCKING HELL!

Ok. First of all i knew this was gonna be the midnight tune - the tune they dropped at NYE at 12. At 12 , at NYE , i was rushing my face off, ANd i heard this tune. Than , here in my livingroom , i relived that moment man. I felt high all over again! Seriously i felt like i was there - it was SUCH an amazing moment. Everybody who was there will agree. Anyway , this tune.

Ok i am going to make major statement

[statement] I THINK THIS TUNE IS AS GOOD AS THE TEST [/statement]

And you all know my love for the test.

I will have a confession for all you fellow geeks - i got a tear in my eye. Two , even.

This tune is everything i feel when i am on top of the world , happy , feeling fucking great combined times 10.000 with a cherry on top.

Its so , how can i say it. I dont even know HOW to describe it. I just think its WICKED. AMAZING. One of their finest moments.

And a Modern Midnight Conversation.

COWBELL! How funky is this! Feel the 80's funkyness! I wanna dress up like madonna complete with fake beaty spot and dance with my girlfriends in the disco to this song! its so, well , i think its very girly! Girly as in , i dunno , i can see all my girlfriends and me dancing to this tune having fun! Jeez do i make much sense today or what ?!

I think The Pills Wont Help U Now is beautiful - and so true. The lyrics are so true. I will listen to this song before i am ever tempted to take drugs again - cause i said i wont - and than i will think " BUT THEY WONT HELP ME!" Ahahaha

I also like the other songs to , but this is what i remember most. My favorites will be Burst Generator , All Rights Reversed and We Are The Night. My least favorite has to be Do It Again - altough it fits very well in the style of the album , in the flow so to speak.

I think Tom and Ed gave everything they got.

Ok - i am expecting great things from them , because they are Tom and Ed! But i think - they cannot top their previous work, because , the creative juices must be gone at one point! But NO PEOPLE! Jeez! They never fail to amaze me. I expect one thing , i hear the total opposite. I feel so much when i listen to their tunes - they never fail to gibe me the most amazing trips and experiences and journeys when i listen to their music.

I can divide the Chems Listening Experiences in two ways ;

1) I make a journey to an amazing world that only excists in my head.

2) It makes me realise that we live in a fucked world but there is actually some goodness left.

Ok i prob dont make much sense to you guys.

But at gigs also, i feel that in that building with 5000 dancing people there is still some love and happyness left in this crazy world we live in.

This album is only a confirmation of that.

I cant wait till its out so i can hear it again.

For some of u it might not make sense that i heard it and than decided not to listen to it till release date , but i had my reasons to feel a bit guilty , and now i know what i am missing , so July 2nd i will run to the music shop!

Tom , Ed , fucking legends.

Thanks for that wonderfull piece of art.

I think you put into words what a lot of people were thinking but unable to express and I agree, it's too hard to sit in silence after hearing such a great thing when all you want to do is shout and tell everyone how brilliant it is!

Jeanie said: blabla 4 listens, deleted it blabla, their best album yet etc.

.

.

.

You can't decide after four listens that this is their best album yet.

The best album is the one you keep coming back to the most.

well, alway depends. Slip your list is kinda backwards from most, given you like the sounds of DYOH the most, which many don't put in their top 3. It's always switched for everyone.

Obviously everyone looks for different things in the chems music. Nice review Jeanie, I was going to say the exact same thing but you beat me, kidding of course, but great review. Glad you're on the "probably the best album" bandwagon and that you too like modern midnighte in all it's cowbell glory. Sounds like a good DJ set song, like they'd play it near that one dubplate special with return to the original art. Anyway, if you've only listened to it 4 times, it will probably become your favorite album, it took me such a long time just to think "wow, the chems really are playing some advanced shit, includes and is not limited to them dancing like a fish and doing the snap."

jesus christ i think i actually agree with slipvin on something.

'world shudders on axis'

you gotta give an album time to bed in - generally i find if i like something right away, il be bored of it in a few months. (not always, but mylo is a good case in point)

u gotta see how much legs an albums got innit...

(cool review though jeans!)
