Hey Bosco maybe next time around Astralwerks will have a street team like how they did with Push The Button. If they do, they'll have it in their Newsletter. Then you can hop on board, get your marketing materials and go to town! Leave the flyers/post cards in coffee shops or bring the materials to some smaller record stores so they can make a little display or something.

I must say any marketing here paled in comparison to the marketing in London. They have it down. When we were there last it was a great time to be a Chemical Brothers fan especially since Push The Button had just come out - huge posters in the tube stations, big window display at the Virgin store on Piccadily, Galvanize blasting out of every HMV we walked past - good stuff!!!

lol, we have no mom and pop record stores/ coffee shops within a 20 mile radius... so the street team thing wouldnt work out too well. That is, unless, starbucks doesnt mind sporting "chemical 6"(jerk the chicken) flyers. It would be different if I lived in the heart of chicago, but i live in the western suburbs :-| .

Meanwhile, Fergie gets the highlighted cd for the next 3 months and is always well stocked and featured all around the store

In all fairness, Bosco, Fergie IS well stocked. Er, stacked.

I wouldn't worry too much and let it get you down ahead of time, Bosco. The US is a huge market that embodies a huge spectrum of listening tastes. It's all about demographics... or at least it should be. Unfortunately with big streamlined stores like Best Buy and Circuit City, catering to the store demographic is not something that is seen as much these days especially since stores are given less and less autonomy. Things are very homegenized here and that is the way it is because in reality, that's American culture if you think about it.

That is why, like anything else, if you want to help something succeed you have to get on the front lines. Call radio stations and request songs, get in touch with the label and get some materials to plaster around town. Grass roots campaigning, man!!

Look at it this way - Push The Button exceeded a lot of expectations in the US market. I remember chatting with my old store's EMD rep and him telling me that combined with the digital market, Push The Button was pretty much the best selling album the Chems had in the States. If you take into consideration that very little front line marketing was done by labels in-store (except for a Push The Button placement on an endrack or listening station here and there) and throw in the fact that the Chemicals are still boxed in here as 'electronica' and you know how picky people are about genres - the overall success of Push The Button was quite a feat.

Well, I think that is just an excuse. This isn't about just your area it is around your area too - 20 miles...it's not that far. It is hard living in the 'burbs because it doesn't hustle like a metropolis does. But then again if the area you're living in is devoid of any kind of culture even though it is literally in the 20 mile blast radius of the city, then why should labels bother with wasting money on marketing, why should a band even bother stopping by if nobody's shown an interest and only made up excuses in the first place.

Getting big posters going and trying to get onside with the big boxes like Best Buy, etc. is the way to get people interested. Where do the majority of people in North America shop for CDs? Big boxes. Simple as. Are we trying to win over the music connaisseur or the average person? Are we going to be elitist and say that this music is too sophisticated for the average moron? I don't think it is nor do I think we should.

Astralwerks, for their part, need to realize that they underperformed marketingwise with PTB and that they can shift a fair few units if they put a little work into it.

I know Winnipeg isn't likely to be a street team city, but I'll likely contact the label to see if there's anything I can do. Anytime I play Chems for friends, or tell people I've travelled to see them, there's always a response. Always. They may not really know who the Chems are in terms of songs, but there is still some residual name recognition.

I agree Tim that Astralwerks underperformance in the in-house marketing department was disheartening and a part of me thinks they may have underestimated how strong an effort Push The Button was. Maybe that is why, in part, they had street teams to push the load off on since Astralwerks have been devoting a lot of time and energy to other releases. All they had to do was send out the materials to those who asked (given their area of course) and the fans do the work for free. It is a great concept that lets the fans do their part and get involved all while spreading the word.

Although it is nice to have our little niche, it is also nice to see new people who have opened their ears to the Chemical Brothers. It's nice to have a new fold of enthusiasm come into play. Even something as simple as stash introducing the neighbors to the Chems and then walking in the next night during a house party and hearing Marvo Ging... telling people about how great their shows are and how they are an experience like no other, popping in the videos when the neighbors stop by with nothing better to do than see what whirly and stash are up to, even telling people that this one Canadian dude we know travelled 60 hours one way on a bus just to see the Chems play Coachella then jetted off a few months later to go ape with forum freaks and meet the dj's on NYE - word of mouth is a powerful thing and music is to be shared and enjoyed by all.

Definetly. It's so gratifying, like the other night when I was out, one of my buddies basically orders me: "Put on the Chemical Brothers!" Alright, don't have to ask me twice. On goes Brothers Gonna Work It Out.

This is a guy who wouldn't know dance music if it slapped him in the face.

Or driving around with a bunch of stoned friends looking up through the hatchback glass of my car at the full moon while I play 'Hold Tight London'.

The quality of the tunes are there. The people are waiting to be won, to an extent.

We definetly need to start new threads for our whining/rational discussion about the state of the Chems on the hick-side of the Atlantic, rather than whoring everyone else's threads!
