MAKING MUSIC : What can you get away with??

I only use Fruity Loops, and techno ejay!!!!!! I know I know, but I have made so fucked up sounds, I tweak samples to make them my own, create drumbs that are so unique that it excites me to the point where im listening to my music everyday!!
I need to know, what other music makers think...can you create something desirable, something new and fresh with what i've got?? I have had a good response from friends, who dont enjoy the dance/leftfield techno etc scene as much as I do, so in that respect, I suppose thats a good sign!
Im at a crossroads in my life, im afraid to expose my music to that many people because im not sure people would get it, especially coming from somerset where the most underground thing is The Prodigy!! Respect to those guys tho!
I need to do this for a living, i know i have the ear for it!!
Peace to all you guys and gals who keep this site going so strong, its nice to be back!
Love is all.

Otherwise, look for other sites about music creation and get your tunes out there. The more constructive criticism you can receive from people who know what they're talking about (from songwriting, production, listening, and clubbing perspectives), the better. You won't grow unless you're willing to listen to a bit of criticism.
While the tools you're working with do seem a bit limited, who knows? Could be great, could be naff. Either way, post 'er up.
Good luck. And welcome back to the board.

Or is my memory failing me and I'm thinking of someone else entirely? ;)
Anyway, I think anyone with enough time, patience, motivation and desire can make lemondade out of lemons. Sure it's nice to have tons of gear to play with, but that's not always possible - I know for me my set up is barebones and very limited and I'm cool with that. I am happy with what I've been able to do with an old Yamaha keyboard, a computer and Reason 1.0. You should never say, "I can only do so much" because if music's your passion, then that mindset should not be an option. If you've got people asking what all gear you've got and you can say "just Fruity Loops and ejay" then I think you're doing well. It's not what you got, it's what you do with what you got that's the ticket.

The music industry can be a tough one to crack. Longevity is subject to everchanging and fickle tastes. Just working on the piss end of the industry in retail for so long, it makes you wonder about things like perfect timing, who's getting it right and wrong, who's gonna stick and who's gonna slide off the wall. It's a tough world out there.

But serious now - i never wrote anything else than tunes on my guitar. So no change for me X-D
V man , i understand youre shyness! I am very shy about other people hearing my songs or things i wrote. Because music is a very personal thing !!! But i think you came to a forum where people are encouraged and people get critics that you can actually do something with. I don't know anything about making electronic music - but i do know if i like a tune or not !! So post youre music in POST YOURE MUSIC HERE and we will all give it a listen ;)
Don't be shy !!

Speaking of pursuing something musical. stash's (ex) step-dad is this incredible guitarist and he's technically gifted, he's got a talent and a good ear and a lot of patience and he plays a few small local gigs here and there. He's been getting into this gypsy jazz music from the early 1900's, stuff like Django Reinhardt and I'm finding that it's really cool actually. Very different from my norm. Anyway, he's teaching me rhythm guitar (because this type of music's percussion *is* the rhythm guitar) since there are no drums present. It's a lot of fun and he's got a lot of faith I can pick this style up and endure (because I quickly learned it's not so much banging out the chords on the guitar, it's endurance you have to accrue to keep the rhythm which holds it all in place)... which means maybe eventually getting to play a couple of songs locally - although getting up in front of people is a whole n'other beast that terrifies me like you wouldn't believe...

I would love to get into the music industry, but I haven't the time or the ambition at the moment. However, I occasionally read interviews with people such as Mylo who learned his craft while doing his PhD dissertation in philosophy or like Antonio Nunez, the ex-Liverpool footballer who acquired his law degree while training with Real Madrid. Makes me want to try a little bit harder. :D
A thing i should consider as well, i was a bit lazy in the past. I'm a bad student . . . :'( The motto should be: Harder, better, faster. A fact i'm talking to myself at the begnning of each semester but then . . . it dissipates in delight . . .

Hi V Man, I've been working only with FruityLoops too for 2 years, and I think CSar wors with it too. Now I bought a drum machine and in the next year I'm planning on buying a master keyboard (dunno if it's the right term) and then later a Juno 106 :) I think you should do the same and buy some hardware, it's the rules of "evolution" :P
Yeah i'm using it too. Not a bad tool for making music. The only thing i worked with in the past. Has some nice features and i think the best and easiest way to create beats with its step sequencer as far as i tried some demos of others . . . Reason is good as well but their damn demo don't allows you playing around for not more than 20 minutes...
I'm also looking for a midi keyboard with usb interface (can't conncet my ol' one) and maybe any other analog generators . . .
Hey V Man, post some of your tracks, i'd like to see how far you can go with Fruity Loops

U should def post some music up and get some of our responses - everyone here will have well trained ears (obviously!)
All the advice I can give is, don't be shy, and if u want to make it big do something different to what everyone else is doing/or whats in fashion right now! Take influences or samples from old lost records that most people haven't heard of. Keep yours ears open!
And if you are shit hot, post it on forums, put it on soulseek or limewire, give a CD of your music to DJs when your at clubs, heck if you're that good - send it to Annie Mac or Pete Tong or any of those dance radio DJs!
My boyfriend put a tune he made up onto soulseek and loads of people downloaded it! Then one night at Turnmills, just as we were leaving, we heard one of the DJs playing it in the backroom - It was nuts! Unfortunately that tune is kind of lost now but still it was sooo cool!
There's no point making music if its not gonna get heard!
