It happened 8 years ago, most people are already over it by now. No offense, but you must have a fairly small record collection coz there wasn't a massive amount of big beat albums released (that I know of)

sarcasm has to be learned to some around here ;-)

I'm just still a big Big/chemical/break beat lover. Not many albums?? All these following labels were big beat labels:

Bolshi

Wall of Sound

Skint

whole 9 yards

DJ Therapy

Freskanova

Fused & Bruised

Dust 2 dust

I still play a lot of big beat tunes in my sets and my friends love it because it suits both rockers and dancers.

But yes I evolved to. More to punkfunk bands (Bloc party) and electro (Felix da Housecat)

Sorry Jos, sarcasm doesn't come through posts too well. Plus I'm pretty unobservant.

Equinox, you've gotta learn to open your mind, man. There is a lot more to music than beats - even drummers think that. With the new stuff, it's about deeper listening - in a way, you've gotta ignore the beats and listen to what else is going on. There are some amazing sounds out there, you've gotta let go of the beats and grasp what's left

For me the beauty of landscape sounds and ambient is Jean Michel Jarre - he is genius of ambient electronic music. I started listening Chems in 1997 because they made incredible things with rhythm (for me this was something new - breakbeat music, something nonstandard and fresh, because i was get age with jarre and oldfield music). If i can hear the beauty ambient, i play equinoxe album, but when i want to go into beaty trans trip i play DYOH. You see??For me always Chems was the beat masters. They charm me with those breaks, beats and rhythms. I see, now they want to creat a beauty ambient and trans ambient, and for me this just doesn't work together.

I think some people pay too much attention to labels and genres. Now doubt they can be helpful when describing a track or the feel of an album... How about liking something based on something other than a label, how about enjoying something without putting it in a box? To give that much credence to labels and genres limits the great possibilites that all kinds of music has.

Whirlygirl, You have right. I really won't hurt Your feelings about the music wchich You listen to. I'am just angry about today music. Most of them hasn't any soul in it. It's plastic. You can take most of the new remixes and see, that they just has not to much common with the original tracks. Mathew Jonson remix of Believe for example is really crap :? I know that this music is perfect to dance in danceclubs, because You can dance practically with every simply music (bum, bum, bum) and You will be enjoyed very much! But for me old techno, trans, breakbeat or evan dance music was capable to listen it in home, not on clubs only! Those music had a soul, something wchich was great. I don't know...i'am just angry...sory fellows, don't take me personally, it's just my feelings...i'am angry :'(

PS. I like Ewan Pearson's remixes to, because those are like the extended versions of original, not just the another tracks.

haha... that is funny. everytime i am not here for some reasons equinoxe starts to piss off more and more people X-D and always for the same reasons. we should have bought that time machine from eBay and should have sent him back to jean michael jarre's time or to 1997 than all of us would be much happier ;-)

the boxer is not my favourite one from PTB and even not one of my favourite chemical brothers ones at all but is still a quality tune that grows and grows. i'd prefer other songs as single (and am sure TB won't make it too good in the charts but who cares about that) but i'd be happy to have it as summer release. *still hope for marvo ging*

instead of having a 2nd album off the PTB sessions i'd rather have the other songs (like spring) as b-sides on the singles... like EP singles, a song off PTB and 3 bonus tracks... as the latest remixes don't kick me at all and i do not seem to be the only one
love is all.

What whirly said is true, many times groups cannot say which kind of music they do, for example The Future Sound of London or even The Prodigy, and that's why they released "Electronic Punks" video with that name, because there wasn't any style so they decided to call it that way.

A couple of weeks ago a guy sent me a link to a page that had all electronica styles and sub-styles with music samples.

I told him that it wasn't a good idea because groups have more than one style.

One example popped up, u-Ziq - Carpet Muncher, it's a great song, but it isn't similar to his other songs, I like u-Ziq but that wasn't right at all.

At least as I explain it, big beat is where within the rhythm of the beat-track some beats are just so much "larger" than other beats. While it may be a 4/4 rhythm with accented beats, the accents (usually on the kickdrum) are insane.

Think the track 'Chemical Beats' is probably the most obvious example. It has the breakbeat, almost in the background, but the driving force is the "WOOOOOOMMMP!!!!!!! .... squelchy synth sound .... WOOOOOMMMMP!!!!!! ...... squelchy synth sound ....... WOOOOOOOOMMMMMP!!!!!!"

Hope this helped.

to me big beat is a kind of breakbeat mostly performed with real sounding drumkits or so and many variations on the beats and breaks (BRB or Diamond Sky, just jumping beats). I call it the rock'n'roll among electronical music
