Crap. Awful melodies. The only good thing about this are the rock drums. The rest is too much of a jumbled chaotic hippie mess. Chems, what have you done???
EBW 9
This one is alright. Good acid squelcher. The vocal sample around 3 minutes is great. Shame it doesn't really lift off though. They build it up, and then decide to break it down whenever it gets interesting. Ouch.
Conclusion
All in all: I wasn't blown away like earlier EBW's did, but EBW 9 has potential to become a good dancefloor shocker. Still both songs sound more like unfinished demo material to me.

Little bit harsh, ya not think? I thought they were both really good.

I agree with those that say it takes a couple of listens to get the gist of it but when you do you want to keep on going back again and again. I actually quite like its disjointedness, I think those who don't 'get' this track need to re-examine things, this is pure Chems euphoria, in its short 5mins it takes me to the same place as Surface to Air.
I'd like to hear the full track because there's obviously more of it, all the EBW's I've heard are fairly long and we only got 5mins of each track, you could tell there was more when Mr Tong came in at the end of what he played.
Is it just me or does EBW8 remind you of the end of Close Encounters of the Third kind when the big mother ship starts 'communicating' in all these short bursts of melody using different noises. 8 kind of sounds similar, it would be funny if that were the inspiration.
I haven't listened to 9 enough yet to really have an opinion on it. Its much more on the other side of the Chems music, big, intense, much more eletronically primal than the more melodic stuff. It'll be great live, and to be honest I sometimes don't 'get' these tracks until I hear them live. I didn't get Believe until I heard it live, but now I think its amazing.

EBW 9: I'm not quite sure what to think of this one. Its definitely more like a club song. The vocoded vocals at the beginning are really fun but they don't seem to come back. Theres also the part that goes really high pitched which is also quite differnt from the chemical sound family. I really enjoy the cow bell in this song but the compression of the released version so far cripples it.
Conclusion: Given that we haven't heard these songs in their full-lenght, uncompressed glory, 8 is my favourite. Even more impressive is that 9 is closer to what I've been wanting, yet 8 exceeds all expectations and comes out on top. Either way, see my sig :D

Agree with you 100%, mate. Especially about relating 9 to Believe. I like it now, and I wanted evil tracks, but it just doesn't quite hit me the way I know it would if I heard it on a massive system. Believe wasn't a track I really liked until seeing it live.
8 is pure magic. Very Surface to Air. Blissful euphoria with some great rock drums. Most are saying it took a couple of listens to appreciate it, for me it was INSTANT: This is a FUCKING TUNE!

Pls pardon me and my continuous 'non-EBW-feeling' debate, but I just thought I had to mention that both Believe and Swiper sound much more EBW-ish compared EBW8 :o Don't ya think?
Also, long time ago, when I didn't know what EBW3&4 were, I thought Hey Boy Hey Girl was an EBW :-// It also sounds like a true EBW... Pounding, like it's ready to destroy any dancefloor it reaches.
Yeah i agree with you anType is a different type of electronic battle weapon and thats why is even better IMO!

It must be pretty gratifying to Tom and Ed that, with exception of about 2 people, everyone is loving these tracks and really getting into them right from the word go. EBW8 is just yet another monumental dancefloor anthem. They sure keep on making them

That said I prefer EBW 9. It's just a rush a wicked, dirty, feet to the floor, stormer. Considering how much I generally prefer the more melodic, textured and 'pretty' Chemical Brothers tracks - this one really stands out for me. It's solid, it's in your face. It makes me want to move and there's nothing quite like driving on a dark semi deserted road at night listening to this pounding out your car stereo. This one would go over more than exceptionally well in a club, but this could be worked into the live set too. Those acid squeals are so Chemical, through and through. It is like their fingerprint on this track - you know it's the Brothers weaving their naughty stompin' magic.
That's not to say I don't like EBW 8. I do - and with more listens this one has grown on me considerably (even though I really dug it at first). I think Toby's brain and me and stash's are on the same wavelength with that whole bit about Close Encounters of the Third Kind - stash and I were both talking about that on Friday night! This one has a more euphoric feel, most definitely over EBW 9. The drums are fantastic like what's been said earlier... Like others have pointed out it does not have the same kind of sinister, in-your-face feel as other EBW tracks but then again who says the Chems can't rewrite their own rules? 8)

To me EBW 8 has all a chemical brothers tune needs to have. Unique melody and structure along with nice bleeps. It impacted on me from first time of listening. I mean, it starts with a simple beat and that lovley sound which is subtle in the background. Then this fuckin' great dums are getting thrown in and all is exploding.
On the other hand i don't like EBW 9 that much. It's a way (too) repetitve and straight techno style (the beat is a little strange). Actually there are some nice elements (vocals and the beginning are def. chemical!!!!) in it . Maybe it's a little bit unfair because it was the second of Pete's set and at that time i was still euphoric 'bout EBW 8.
